Description 8 angles of the final piece
painted magic sculp epoxy clay
55 in high X 12 in wide X 21 in deep

I'll upload some detail shots later

edit: coming up on three years since this was made. in that time it has been in two art galleries, five art shows and loved by fans of dragons and even some who don't realy like dragons (can't understand that), several people have said they're saving up for it. As of yet it's still not sold. Do to the fragility of it I won't trust it to any shipping company so will only deliver it myself. price of the piece is set at a very low $3625. if you are within 20 miles of me, I'll deliver it for free. beyond that I'll need gas money
thanks for your continued love of my work and support.

Holy moly.

First I didn't believe that was a physical sculpture but a 3D model. But when I read your artist's comment I just had to accept that fact.

Damn.

The way that little dragon is almost like balancing on then nose of the bigger dragon... Amazing work.
The details too.

FAVED ofcourse!

This is just stunning!! I wish I had this type of skill. Its always more difficult to work in 3 dimensions.

learn to see all sides of things in your mind and you'll find sculpture is much easier.

Gorgeous. Dragons are typically sinister & threatening, so great to see one portrayed in a more sympathetic, charming way. Great work. Outstanding composition.

Always wondered how dragons learnt it as jumping from a cliff and failing would be rather disastrous for the poor dragonspawn...

The sculpture is very fluid and gives me a sense of tenderness and care that you see with dogs and their puppies.
Simply amazing... Absolutly stunning!!

Congratulations for your artwork. Your whole gallery makes me itchy with joy, but this particular picture takes the cookie jar!!

I had heard once that when eaglets learn to fly, if they are unable to fly the parent eagle will swoop down and catch it on there back before it hits the ground. so I figured, how much more would an inteligent being like a dragon do.

I wish you were selling this piece of art I'm the biggest dragon luver in the world!!!! LMAO I actually worked with clay for a while and loved it but I was just to slow for what they had available in class it was fast air drying and I'm a big perfectionist. where would you get this type of clay? an whats its cost? I just adore your piece it is absolutely incredible, breathtaking, their aren't enough words to describe your talents. And I actually don't think you needed to make her wings smooth I actually like it as is, it gives it more texture and tangibility. Very well done look forward to more.

I am selling this piece. it's priced a little low from my point of view, but probly a little high from someone elses. $1625, will deliver if you are within 50 miles of me. if not, I would be afraid of it not surviving shipping.
it is made of Magic Sculp epoxy clay. you can learn more about it at [link] as well as distributers in your area or on line. I buy it on line and I buy it in bulk. the per pound price is about $14, but if you buy 100 pounds you're looking at a $680 price tag, you save alot, but only if you're going to use that much in a year.

So how exactly did u make this, is the sculpture solid clay or did u start with something before hand as a base. Im not familiar with epoxy clay did u need a kiln? Theirs a project I want to make but im not sure how to do it. With what id like to do I need be able to take my time and make alot of detail with out my medium drying up or falling apart during the process, like when I worked with some water based clay that needed to be fired. Is your sculpture strong and solid? or does it need to be handled with kid gloves? What should I use to be able to get the results that you've achieved. Thanks, Tiff

when I started this piece I didn't know of the existance of epoxy clay. so when I created the armeture it was of copper wire and I had the intent of using a plasticine clay and then having a mold made of it. what this means is that the armeture is more substantial than it needed to be.
so this piece contains within the epoxy clay outer, aluminum foil as filler (epoxy clay is expencive, ou don't want to use any more than you have to) copper wire armeture and a T pipe fitting that got left behind when I removed the support structure and a block of wood for balast at the bottum.
epoxy clay is an epoxy with a fine pollimer mixed in to give it volume. epoxy is a chemicaly bonded, two part, adhesive. the adhesive strength of this product is between 250, and 350 pounds per square inch. in other words, it is very strong. I pick the entire piece up with one hand grabing the neck of the larger dragon. the only realy fragile part is the ancle of the baby dragon at the top.
the cure time for this is 4 to 6 hours, more or less depending on the temprature, it doesn't need to be fired in any way however since it is a chemicl cure. this does seem like a short time to work. however, since it does not shrink at all, you can work in layers, building up as you go without worry of cracking. if you would like more information feel free to send me a note.

professionalamature [2008-12-13 06:50:38 +0000 UTC]

Wow.. I love the pose of the dragon, and your wing structure actually looks real, The curve at the bottom of the beat as it starts to pull up. Something that I haven't properly seen in movies since DragonHeart, and pretty much intirely forgotten in sculpting.

It'd be nice to get a close up of the globe at the bottom and the smaller up top.

Is this by any chance based on McCaffrey?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dragonsculptor In reply to professionalamature [2008-12-13 11:35:29 +0000 UTC]

thank you, I spend some timeworking out the dynamics of the wing in flight coupled with the slight effect of the tips grazing the water.

I did say I was going to upload some detail shots later didn't I

hard not to be inspired by McCaffrey, but this one wasn't based on her work.
