Description

5 million years after the age of mankind, in the south of the Sahara, where once it was sand and dunes, the vast amounts of grass that now form savannas extends to the horisont, being home to titanic bovids of long horns, which graze in huge herds of hundreds of individuals, followed by thousands and tens of thousands of medium sized antelopes with different and elaborate horns, striped and spotted varieties of equids, and several large boars that have recently joined in the chain of grazing herbivores.

Of all of them a particular figure crosses the landscape at great speed, making turns and taking great strides with considerable speed. This is followed by what appears to be a medium feline, long-legged, compact body, and short tail, a descendant of the Caracal that have grown up and have established themselves among the new big cats, in this case, being a runner, however, this is not able to keep pace with the agile being who knows how to avoid the predator being a fairly resilient prey to be trapped. The bipedal figure that is fleeing is a result of an evolutionary line that has adapted properly to support long distance runs, equipped with huge and muscular legs with semi digitigrades feet, compact body and a bare skin that allows regulating its temperature, being one of the most prolific species of post-humans that exist in the future, a cursorial folk. They are omnivorous, preferred to eat insects, carriot, meat of small animals, tubers, as they are not hunters anymore for millions of years, returning to the middle base in the trophic chain and being the prey of other major predators, although thanks to their ability to run has helped them to thrive.

The success of this new human species came from the trend they started, from the line drawn many millions of years ago when its ancestral hominids abandoned the safety of the jungles and went into the savannas, eventually modifying the morphology of the feet and hips that were restructured for the upright walk, and then able to run. Of course bipedalism apart of just let them run, also launched the clade into a brief but quite transcendental period of dominance over the planet, evolving into varieties of species that expanded across the planet, and of which only one would come to dominate everything for at least less than 1 million years using their brains, and eventually losing the domain and returning to a more “wild state, becoming into another of the species of organisms that roams the earth. From this last hominid species evolved new others re-diversifying this clade again, which most not changing too much in terms of anatomy and maintaining the same lifestyle of high intelligent hominid species with minor variations in culture of tool use, but the cursorial folk were one of the few kinds of humans to managed to begin to modify the original form though adaptation, increasing the derivation of cursoriality in primates. Although they still use some kind of tools and have cognition, they aren’t as intelligence as their ancestors, losing the sapience, as this trail isn’t any more sustainable for survival as before, now being the derivation of the anatomy of its limbs the trail most benefited.

Despite the fact that intelligence helped mankind enough for its survival during its early few million years of existence, at this point a progressive reduction has come and eventually the clades that have found new ways to survive without it will make it disappear completely, and for the cursorial folk will be the trend to follow.

Most current big cats are extinct already, this is part of a new wave of large felines that replaced them

Do you have a timeline or a document or an artwork showing the process of Homo Sapiens becoming more and more animalistic and less and less human-like until we are once again the ordinary, non-sapient hominids depicted in this artwork?

Okay. I get that. Do you have a general idea of how you want the process of devolution to have gone?

Love it. Its always hard for me to imagine a post-human, as loosing the sapience over the course of evolution seems a weird thing to be done, but realistic anyways. Great speculative job!
