Description
They Suidae turn out to be one of the most successful mammal’s clade after the extinction of the Quaternary in terms of megafauna, developing both large carnivores such as heavy herbivores. Although at the beginning of Agresti (65 M.Y.) period the most outstanding species of this group were large predators, later they began to appear new branches that with the climate stability and a fertile environment, these started to grow. Hence it arises one of the best adapted type of herbivores around end of the Cenozoic.
The Lambdi Thunderhog (Hyobosoide lambdioceratus), is one of several species of large herbivorous mammals belonging to the family Brontohyodae appeared in the late Agresti (107 m) period and spread throughout the northern hemisphere during the Crescgeon period (107-145 m). The female has a length of about 3 meters, a height to the withers of about 2.20 meters and weighing up to 1.3 tons, the male is a bit small. As can be seen, the head of this great mammal is massive in relation to its body, with the most characteristic feature, two fused front tusks that act as horns, growing forward of the head similar to its extinct distant relative the Babirusa, however depending on the genus, these varies in shape and size. In the case of the Lambdi, they have L-shaped tusks, being quite wide in front, with a semi-cylindrical shape. This species as many others have been adapted their digestive systems to deal with poor and hard plant material such as grass, evolving convergently features similar to bovine, including a specialized dentition and stomach chambers to ferment plant material.
This species is gregarious, gather in huge herds in cases of migration or abundance of food in specific territories with thousands of individuals, but commonly they gather in groups of 15 to 30 individuals. This species tends to reproduce in early summer time, being usually the healthiest and old adult males the ones which have the right to mate; its gestation period lasts about 11 months, given birth only one with a calf that will stay with her mother for over 1 year, until this is able to care for themselves; from here, one Lambdi thunderhog have a lifespan of about 30 years.
