Description The Earth within 560 mya in the future is a desert-moor after several massive catastrophes that ended the earthly life forms, just out of his last mass extinction that took almost the death of most of the species in land and sea. The geography is quite unrecognizable, there are more continents as we know them. The oceans have been empty, there are no reefs, swimming pools or large animals. Basically just still some bivalves, echinoderms and some other worm. In every continent margins remain the few forests and jungles recognizable. Similar to bamboo with weird shaped leaves like palm trees are the dominant flora, about a variety of flowering plants, lichens, and ferns spread by underground.

The recognizable wildlife that has been through the world are insects that despite its age, the simplest forms have survived, some are similar to beetles and cockroaches. Also remain recognizable other arthropods such as millipedes and arachnids. Joining them are other types of invertebrates that have appeared recently, as foreign land molluscs, crustaceans can live entirely on land and others. It has been shown that none of these ecosystems are a remnant of vertebrates. These after various disasters that occurred simultaneously in the past 50 mya have led to extinction, leaving no trace of them. However, it is not the end of everything. Among the deep forests maintain what could be the last remains of this large clade, are the Tatzels.

The tatzels (Wyvernimorpha) are an order of amniote vertebrates descended from snakes. Most are in ranges from 5cm up to half a meter long. These form part of the last remaining legacy of vertebrates on earth after several devastating extinctions. What is noted as a "body" is actually the head of his ancestors, which over time changed their structure. The lower jaw has evolved into limbs while the upper jaw is segmented into several individual parts to allow more movement. At the extremes of their limbs, hands have four fingers ending in teeth and derivatives of the jaw itself. Its serpentine body, with the passage of time was reduced, losing several vertebrae in the process. The Loreal pit ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loreal_p… ) have evolved into a complex organ, covered by a crystalline membrane, which developed from his skin. This receiver has the ability to sense the infrared spectrum, in a similar manner to the eye interprets as light to form images, but rudimentary form, ie not forming sharp images. It has a mouth divided into 4 parts derived from the dentition of the palate, developing a heterodontial teeth. They are omnivorous, their diet consists of plants, insects and decaying material. Most of them are endothermic animals, daytime behavior. Depending on the species, their various social behavior, from solitary to those that develop complex social systems.

They are viviparous placental but not similar to eutherian mammals because after birth, the placenta still keep it below their chest. as a source of nutrition before feed themselves. The gestation periods ranging from a few weeks to about 6 months. The longevity of the species is on average between 5-25 years.

There are about 10 genera with 70 species which are relegated to several islands and a continent. Despite being a promising link to vertebrates back to dominate the earth after its annihilation, it will only be a matter of time for the sun to get rid of them along with everything else. At that time, the earth are near the end of the age of life, and a few hundred million years, when our star begins to grow, the earth will soon become hostile to complex life forms, giving it a definitive end to everything.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey, mind if I steal your world for an Eclipse phase thing?

Warframe, meets Skyrim, meets D&D who are all mugged in a dark alley by Fallout & saints row 4.
I'm planning on inflicting time travel shenanigans upon my players, & seeing how long it takes them to work out it's earth. While being eaten by insect mouthed snake-owls.
As to the "nicking" it means to steal something, but in context; borrow your setting, for the strictly limited purpose of being a gorgeous backdrop as well as a vital plotpoint.

I do apologise for the verbosity, but I've been awake for three days.

It is interesting what are they and you do, however, I don't wish to incorporate the scenario to other one, so no, sorry.

You misunderstand, I'm not after a collaboration; this is something that only four people will ever see.

I thought earth had another 2 billion years before the sun snuffed us out.

if the total atmospheric pressure is reduced. A decrease in atmospheric pressure would reduce the greenhouse effect, whereby the temperature of the earth's surface is also reduced.

I understand that snakes are interesting choice for future evolution, but why do you think that vipers would survive better than all other groups of snakes?

What you talking about? at no time I mention a specific group of snakes

Well, not all snakes have heat sensing pits I was under the impression that only vipers had them...

itself could be the case that new species evolve the same characteristic. In short, this evolves over 400 million years in the future, and had declared that these are derived descendants, probably related to vipers, but not be exactly their direct ancestors

Still really cool I just would've expected that road and some frogs would've also survived to the far future, considering how well they survived this point.

something doesn't make sense here. descended from snakes, but have forelegs. some snakes have residual hindlegs, so i think those could be restored, technically, but this looks really far-fetched, given the suggested ancestry, except if they came from a creature like this: calphotos.berkeley.edu/imgs/51…

that's why Tatzel limbs are not true legs, they are derived from the lower jaw of the snakes.

i should read all the description first sorry XDI really don't know if that makes it any better though. i mean... wouldn't the snakes need the mouth for eating in the first place? one does not simply start walking on their mouth

Dragonthunders In reply to PeteriDish [2014-11-20 21:51:34 +0000 UTC]

hehe, no problem. remember that they do not chew, just they swallow. also the evolution of the jaw to limbs was not something one day to another, this class of vertebrates have been more than 500 mya to evolve. the world in which they live is in the distant future
