Description Finding himself at the mercy of Optimus Prime, Thundercracker bargains with the only thing that he has to offer: a story.

Best First won ‘Best Fanfic Story of the Year’ in the 2002 Trannies (Transformers awards) and won ‘Best Fanfic Story Ever’ at the most recent Trannies. To this day it remains the most reviewed story on the Transformers Fanfic Lexicon, [link] is still in the top ten ‘most read’ and ‘favourite’ stories and is one of the ‘featured’ stories.

The silhouette of Thundercracker over Cybertron on the bookcover is a tribute to Kaeae’s [link] Skies Over Polyhex [link] - fanart by the greatest Best First fanartist out there.

This is something of a ‘tenth anniversary’ release, but without the response that Best First received a decade ago, I would never have known that I could write and for that I am forever grateful. Particular thanks go to Iacon, Derik Smith, Zobovor, Aaron F. Bourque, Jackpot, Velvet Glove and Thomas Hamann. Extra special thanks to Merytneith, without whose feedback I would never have written a second chapter, and without whose support (and nagging and threats) I would never have finished the other seven chapters.

This is, hands down, the best transformers fanfic I've ever read. One of the best stories I've read in general. I only hope that one day I can become as good a writer as you are.

This was great! I really enjoyed it! I cracked up at poor Spectro. And they didn't dare let him tell his story when they were flying. Genius. And the worm. Hehehe. "What does it transform into?" "Nothing." "Well, that's just depressing." Great story!

The best Transformers fanfiction of all time by any standards of the bar, the one by which all others are compared to. Here here for ten years!

I'm pretty sure "I make a da peetzza" was one of Dino/Mirage's lines in Dark Of The Moon.

Wait...what was his designation? He was "a" Thundercracker, but the other Thundercrackers also had separate designations...

Actually, no one ever calls him by name they just refer to him as 'Minister' or call him 'Thundercracker' as a designation of rank. So somewhat like Rebecca or Green Eggs And Ham or Withnail and I, we don't know what the narrator's name (originally) was. (Thanks for reading!)

Still reading.

I don't get the "I, Haul" thing. The mech that left, was it Megatron or Haul? Why did Thundercracker find that funny?

He thinks it's Megatron, but he finds out once the robot leaves that it's just Haul, Megatron's removalist. The laughter is a combination of laughing at himself for his mistake and nervous hysterics at realising that Megatron is still out there and probably wants him dead.

Ahhh. Makes sense.

And I like your explanation of how Optimus Prime chose his name. In G1, he just kinda wakes up from being almost-dead and has some miraculous epiphany: "Dudes! Imma call myself Optimus Prime because I am Optimus Prime and can do inexplicable things like that!"

I still think Beast Wars is the most amusing when it comes to names - "I'm a cheetah! No... I'm Cheetor!" That franchise had a particularly GoBot-esque naming system. It would be like waking up on the Ark and hearing everyone say "From now on, call me Ambulanceor!" "Of course, and I'm Volkswagenox!" "Just as long as you save some Decepticons for Porchetron!" etc.

This looks sweet! I started it but don't have time to finish. So far I'm really enjoying it. I like the immediate tension. I look forward to finishing it when I have the time!

It kind of reminds me of Scheherazade. Very cool. I'll have to bookmark this and read it in full when I get the chance.

Thanks so much. You're not the first to make that connection - in this review, [link] it was suggested that "Thundercracker's unrevealed original name was Scheherazade".
