Description
Just some very basic practice for the style I want to go for with Mark of the Conifer. I figured out how to use the paint mixer in Corel Painter, which has helped immensely. But I've always wanted to get that two-tone look, and I've always been a wimp with my shadows, so I feel like I'm kind of, sort of moving in the right direction. These were all maybe 40 minutes to an hour each, so nothing extensive. Just color studies.

Nice to see your concepts for the characters, and their markings. I have a question about Sarkanj's and Cheharraphix's markings: Is the only way Cheharraphix differs from Sarkanj in her single row of orange spots on her torso, her dark grey vs black coloring, and more of the turquoise on her face, plus that orange snout patch? I have to ask, since it looks like you posted this over two years ago, and since I plan on doing art of them, I want to get their markings perfect!

If you're looking for differences in a markings then this piece might be a little more helpful: droemar.deviantart.com/art/Mar...
It's definitely what I use to try and keep everybody straight.

Yes, but there's a problem...Sakanj is being blocked by an Astrodon.

I think whatever marks are of significant difference are visible.

Very nice color work, but I noticed you didn't even credit the poses you used for this work which are the poses by various artists (such as Bryan Baugh and Bret Booth) in the book "Thunder Lizards! How to draw fantastic dinosaurs" by Steve miller. Credit is deserved when someone else's work used Otherwise its nice work.

I love that book! Robert Bakker is the head of the museum in Houston, where my sister lives, so next time I go visit her I'm gonna see if I can meet the guy in person.

They look even radder up close. i'm especially digging the trike's (that's probably not what is) frill. It looks skull-like and intimidating.

I love so much that the raptor is the same colours as a plush I have. The lighting is delicious on all of these.

you reached an excellent color compromise between naturalistic (desaturated) and saturated color on Sunstrike. It looks very, very good.

I think you approached the colors and color placement well. An example being the triceratops and its coloring located on the frill to (possibly) attract a mate. Same goes for the raptor and its feathery crest.
Will you be creating your own illustrations or cover art for the story?

Yeah, pretty much. That's the plan, anyway. I'm going to try and market it to an agent, but if that utterly fails, there's always the ebook option!

Best of luck with finding an agent! I think including something like this could really help your pitch.
Hmmm, there's hardly any authors who decide to create their own cover art/illustrations and instead rely on someone else... Book or ebook I'll take a look 8)
