You’re in a desert walking along in the sand when all of the sudden you look down, and you see a tortoise, it’s crawling toward you. You reach down, you flip the tortoise over on its back. The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over, but it can’t, not without your help. But you’re not helping. If you haven't read it (you might have), Isaac Asimov's "Caves of Steel" has a very similar test in it; it was written in 1950.

I have, actually. There is a special place in my heart for classic and hard scifi, and I once got a wonderful collection of scifi books as a gift and I remember the story! Currently, I am revisiting the Noon Verse by the Strugatsky Brothers.

One of the biggest honors I've ever had was to meet and chat with Fred Pohl in Dayton. I told him that one of his stories, "The Hated," would have made a wonderful Twilight Zone episode. He then proceeded to tell me about Rod Serling, whom he'd known. It was truly one of the coolest things I've ever had happen to me.
I live that old classic SF as well, and love to stalk used bookstores. I'm currently re-reading the third Foundation book.
