Description A slice of history in the making - the original Mandelbulb (power 8), rendered using custom raytracing software to a giant 7500x7500 pixel resolution.

Unlike other 3D fractals, intricate variety and detail is found in all axes, and of course it goes on forever, no matter how far you zoom in.

A 3D fractal. Okay, are you trying to make my head explode?

This kinda reminds me of those planetoid drawings that M.C. Escher did.like if you try to place yourself in the canyons and cracks in that structure, it looks like some kind of alien landscape.

Saw this on slashdot a few days ago. Pretty cool stuff! It's inspired me to try and write my own software for similar stuff, although right now it can only render 2D Mandelbrot sets because I haven't written most of the math stuff yet

...also C++ has a built-in complex class that I used.

Something too alien for existence. Also zooming in scares me.

I'm kind of amazed that people respond to nine year old posts of mine. Hello.

Looks incredibly organic, compared to the Mandelbrot set (to my eyes anyway)- almost disturbingly so; utterly fascinating render!

Thanks all! Cool to hear about the DD. Since I'm a new member to dA, I didn't know what that really was until 10 minutes ago!

It looks like some sort of beautiful sea creature, like one of those sponges or something but way more awesome, and probably from another planet too. Congratulations on your DD

I am truly humbled and amazed when I see this. Not only did you make a 3D Mandelbrot, you made it using software you created yourself, which of course must take a lot of time and effort. I was looking at your Skytopia site on this, and I think it's really fascinating how you made this, and the epilogue you wrote on it is quite surprising to me.

Oh, and I looked at some of the images in your Skytopia article, and I noticed that a couple of them looked a little bit like some spherical viruses I've seen in microscope images. Really interesting.

I absolutely love how this looks. very similar in structure to a "Solid State" shown in a popular Anime. Ghost in the Shell

i've been making some progress on my little 3d-mandy renderer: with the most basic shading it gets 3fps at 1024x1024 resolution! that's with brute force ray marching too, using DE it should be so much better in many ways (numerically as well as performance-wise).

so yeah, even if i can't compete with (high)iq, i'm looking forward to producing some animations of the thing as well

this is just incredible! i am in awe at how you have managed to take the 2D mandelbrot and render it completely in 3D. It looks amazing, i would love to see this from other angles, particularly involving the entire mandel, the overall 3D shape of it.

Another random thing, how long this take to render?! 7000x7000 with a 3D render, must have taken FOREVER!!!

dspwhite In reply to Drummerboy08 [2009-11-13 13:52:49 +0000 UTC]

Hi and thanks! Glad you like it - wait until you zoom into this thing It must have taken around 4-8 hours I think for the 7000x7000 version.

I've updated the preview image so that it's bigger. FYI, the background behind this object can be found from this Skytopia article:

(there's also an even bigger, but low quality jpg of this image there).
