Description
First of all, major props and respect to D3M0NI0. The mech is his model, used with permission ( email copy included in the zip). Without the inspiration I drew from his work, this wouldn't be here.I chose the title "Insufficient Data" as a rather ironic encapsulation of the theme of the peice. We now live in a world where data is important. In the future, data is everything; we will eat data, sleep data, dream data, breathe data... We may even bridge the gap between man and machine and connect our own organic computers to the vast network of data we will erect.
But to what end is all of this? I believe data is like water - we cannot survive on too little, but too much will drown us. The future we must fight is the oversaturation of data.
The concept idea of this peice was the automatic processing of a new realtime event from a mobile computer, namely, the detection of an otherwise uncataloged mecha. This, of course, is analogous to the processing of information undergone in US submarines today upon the detection of an uncataloged contact. The process depicted in the image is far more sophisticated, immediately deluging the mech pilot with auto-analyzed schematic data, live radar tracking, automatic image magnification, automatic approximation of multiple perspectives, automatic interception of data transmission from the contact and the decryption thereof, and so on. All these automated processes beg the catchphrase, "the revolution will be automated."
All of the data in this image actually says something. For novelty's sake, I'm going to copy and paste everything into this file. Yes, it's all made up. Yes, I wrote it all. Please don't try to point out any technical inconsistencies, because I'm absolutely positive they're there.
Enjoy the wallpaper, everyone, and remember - no one wants a future in which one is only worth the data they process.

What lies below is a snippet of everything I've written in the megareadme file pertaining to all the "data" displayed in this image.

[Anything preceeded with underscores, dashes, equals, or parenthesises are for identification's sake. My notes are in square brackets for your help in understanding what I was thinking while writing this crap.]
__-=Schematic Information=-__
-Omega Cannon-
Deceptively powerful energy cannon
Constructed of materials unknown
Output unknown
Input unknown
Vulnerability unexplored
(Chart displaying stored output data)
Output Payload
100MBW 3 megatons
200MBW 5 megatons
300MBW 10 megatons
400MBW 20 megatons
500MBW 50 megatons
600MBW 80 megatons
700MBW 300 megatons
[MBW stands for Megabogowatt. It's from the 2000 incarnation of a programming contest here at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. I'm pretty sure it's not a real unit, but what do I know?]
(Graph displaying above data)
Output of the Omega Cannon is predicted to be between 500 and 700 MBW
The largest output cannon owned by the UFWW is 462MBW
Additionally, our researchers have no idea through what method the Omega Cannon is powered.
Our largest outputting cannons require thick transmission cables, at least trhee times the width of the support ring on this mech.
EXTREME CAUTION IS ADVISED IN APPROACHING THIS MECH.
[UFWW stands for "United Federation of the Western World"]

This looks like it belongs in MechWarrior or some other mecha game. I like all of the tidbits that describe the different parts of the mecha. The background is also ambient and unobtrusive. Good stuff.

wow! over 200 layers! i can't even begin to imagine the time you have put into this, but it was well worth it! i must say that i usually don't like this kind of stuff, but this is exceptional

Again, the unusual composition. It's not my style, but I can dig.

Sorry to disappoint you dygel, but I'm pretty sure I *have* seen a longer comment somewhere on this site; just can't remember where it was...
I like the concept, and it's executed well (and is currently sitting on my desktop! ) I think if the background were more detailed, it would no longer work so well as a wallpaper! And, of course, since this represents a computer-generated cockpit display, it makes sense for the threat to be highlighted and all the unimportant background details (terrain, etc) be omitted... (If it were a computer-enhanced HUD, of course, things might be different!

That's nice. But for me it looks like unfinished or so. You have to put more things and a right background on it.

To the extream, very nice makes we want to go and be a mech warrior again.
The back ground info is great it ceates more of a feeling for it suiting and makes up for the lack in the back of the image. I have used both PSP and Photoshop and this is the highest quality work I have seen so far, and the 200+ layers must have been fun to work with I have worked with a max of about 60 but that was heck on the POS system I was having to use. Over all I would buy an over sided printer and send it to an Art Gallery.

i've always been a fan of this kind of wireframe art, and this is a great example of it.
if i may offer one suggestion; the background could be a little more interesting.... theres nothing there to complement the wireframe or text - but thats just my personal preference!
lovely piece

Wow, that's the very longest description I've ever seen.
This is sweet, but I'll agree that the bg looks a little flat.
A little high tech gridding or something to break up the space might be just what the dr ordered. Or maybe not. What do I know, I'm a poet!
