You know just how much I love this, I'm absolutely in love and like Ruanly said, it could be the best one I've ever seen too! What makes that even better is that you've made it of Iye and I can't thank you enough! Ā

This might be the best horse pixel of this size I've ever seen. Holy shit. Your particular style is absolutely amazing and the precision you have.. how much flow you manage despite the harsher medium.. I mean I am just seriously in love with this, I can't stop staring and I'm envious it's not my character, that's how great it is!Ā

Every time I get comments like this I go into 'shy-mode' and forget that I probably should reply. But ohh my goodness this made me grin from ear to ear, I am so glad that you like it! I wish I could find my consistency with these but unfortunately my art is still in that 'hit or miss' stage. Thank you very much for such a kind and thought out comment, I reallly appreciate it.

Awwww I can definitely relate! Hell, I've been doing this for years and I still feel like I'm in that 'hit or miss' stage hahahah and sometimes the most sincere, touching comments we get just make us wanna hide our faces xD You're very welcome, though, I mean it all and you really deserve it. I love all of the pixels you produce, I haven't seen one I dislike yet, and your style is just.. it's very recognizable and it's very appealing. I literally JUST started trying to do pixels, I've only done one yet, but if you ever have any tips, I would love to hear them! A tutorial or just a little blurb about dos and don'ts or how you do things or whatever. Your style is very unique and I'd love to learn how you do it. It's almost like cell-shaded pixels? (I don't even know how to cell-shade, let alone pixel, so I'm way behind on this lol)
If you ever do decide to make a tutorial or even just a casual walkthrough of one you did, please tag me!

It really sucks sometimes haha. But ahh I appreciate it, it's definitely nice to hear every once in a while

And yess I can go through my process real quick here since it is really simple! I actually thought about doing a little process gif for this but didn't end up doing one. I also use Paint tool SAI for all of my pixels, the only time I use photoshop is for the final touch ups (like minor sharpening and the white border). I find SAI to be very smooth and you can draw a straight line without getting that jagged look like you do in photoshop. Though that being said I recently learned if you press shift it should give you a one pixel line (I haven't tested this out though).Ā

I always start out with a sketch on a much larger canvas (my default is like 1500x1500, but it doesn't really matter how big it is since it will get resized), I generally always use some kind of reference even just for inspiration for poses and just go from there (I usually change poses up a bit from the actual reference(s) as well, I just kind of go with it haha). When I'm happy with the sketch I will drag it onto a 100x100 canvas, I do the same thing with icons as well, and line it. SAI has inbuilt stabiliser that help to slow down your line and prevents the 'wobbles', which can help with lines here. I then colour it. I try to use the pencil tool as much as possible and avoid the brush tools or blender/smudge since it takes away from the pixelly effect. After I have the basic colours down then I shade it. And you are correct I do use cell shading for these, I took inspiration off of some other pixel artists here since I noticed their pixels tend to be crisp and clean. For the shading I use the blending option 'multiply' and lower the opacity to a place that looks reasonable. I will generally use a dark navy blue or purple for the shading, but it varies from piece to piece. Sometimes I will just use the base coat/marking colour for the shading and other times I'll fiddle in hue/saturation to see if there is something I like better. Then sometimes I will add in a bit of highlight using the same technique but with the blending mode being like screen or luminosity and will either use the base coat colour or a warm yellow/light yellow/white, depending. But I've also learned sometimes it looks better without the highlighting so do without. It really depends on the piece. And sometimes I will also add colour to the lineart and other times I won't.

But yea, that's it really! I might do a gif of a future pixel as well to better demonstrate how I do it. It is pretty simple but feels really complicated at first XDĀ

OH yea I forgot to mention I also do gesture drawing exercises whenever I'm feeling stuck or need to warm up. I've been really trying to loosen up my drawings, it's been hard but these exercises are really quite handy. I use this site for gesture drawings: artists.pixelovely.com/

Oh wow thank you SO much for that amazingly thought-out and comprehensive comment! I appreciate it so damn much! How do you color with the pen tool, if you don't mind my asking?Ā
I'm heavily considering getting SAI, have been for a while, but I tend to get confusing results when I google. >.> To verify I'm not downloading a virus or something, can I ask which site you used?Ā

Ehrendi In reply to Ruanly [2016-10-31 21:25:37 +0000 UTC]

Not a problem! And I don't know what you mean by pen tool? I use the pencil tool to colour, in SAI it is called binary or legacy tool, basically the pixel brush xD I use it the same way I would as a normal brush. It just doesn't have the pen sensitivity either. I usually keep it at 1 pixel or for bigger areas I'll bump it up. For things like dapples and spots I tend to draw little crosses like +Ā

SAI is really great, I just love it. It's perfectly designed for artists and compliments PS well (I tend to flip-flop between them all the time).Ā

And as for the sites, are you looking for a legal download? Lol it's been a while since I used the other one so I can't help you there, but I purchased SAI off of this site for about 70aud or about 50usd:
www.systemax.jp/en/sai/

It is 100% legit. You won't get a virus from it.Ā
