I look at the Becher books and I can remember the times when they seemed a kind of threat, ready to take over the world. And now I wonder and regret that so many have already gone.
But I was down in the Freiberg mine this summer and I loved it.

Lovely lines, especially - now that nobody has mentioned it - the godrays going parallel with one leg of the winding tower.

As a student of geology I had the opportunity to go like 1200 metres down here in the Ruhr Area. Dante-like impressions.
The only thing I regret with this photo is that it shows the Schalke 04 gyml - pfffh. Certainly not my favourite club

I only went down to 150 m, for the short tour. Mrs ForFriends was waiting "ΓΌbertage" and we were on a tight schedule anyway. But as a special treat I was allowed on top of the winding tower there.
I'm tempted to come back for a longer tour some day.

Well, at least they have a centre-forward who loves Caravaggio!

About coming back for a longer trip or about the Caravaggio-loving centre-forward? More about the latter, at least...

Centre-forward, of course.

Oh, okay. During his time in Milan, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar had a lot of time to spare (as he didn't quite make it to become a regular in the first team) so he started to visit the museums there. It's quite some time ago since I read the interview, but the gist of it was that he became a huge Caravaggio admirer. He can do no wrong for me since.

I really like the composition of this one, and the blacks and almost silvery grays. This one especially seems like it would look even better as a print than on the monitor. Do you make prints of some of your work?

EintoeRn In reply to RichardLeach [2009-10-10 15:53:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Richard. I am lucky that I can use a canon large format printer in my office and I bought myself some really expensive fine art printing paper. But I do not have any more free walls
I have sent one to Kat the other day as she did a ery nice cpllage pstcard for me (she seems to be gone for the week-end, though)
well, the picture reflects the past decades of this part of the world, there are only a handful of coal mines left, way up north of the river Ruhr and they go down for more than a 100 metres to dig out the coal. Which is very obviously much more expensive than importing it form China or Australia ....

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RichardLeach In reply to EintoeRn [2009-10-10 16:51:55 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Ulrich.

There used to be a lot of coal mining just 50 km west of where I live - I've toured the now closed mines. It was hard coal - less polluting - but involved people going down deep as at the mine you describe. There was also a bad accident when they strayed under a river about 50 years ago. And it is cheaper and easier to get soft, dirty coal by blowing off the tops of mountains in states further south...

Fossil energy is a big issue here, of course, probably more than in the U.S. of A.
The new administration here will probably close the last mines as well and rely totally on foreign energy and nuclear power (no place for radioactive waste here, in such a small country).
Measures to stop global warming? No way. As a geologist I know that for now it happens since the last glacial period (some 10 000 years ago). In geological terms this is just like a second, and at that time the glacial front was like 20 km north of my home. It is a very anthropocentric point of view that it is possible to stop it.
Which is no excuse to waste fossil fuel as if it would never end, of course.

RichardLeach In reply to EintoeRn [2009-10-10 17:48:03 +0000 UTC]

Oh, fossil energy, "clean" energy, and global warming, what large, important and problematic issues - I have to go out, perhaps we can talk more about this later or pick it up in another thread.
