I used to have some geese...they were the best "guard dogs" I ever had! I loved to stroke the super-soft feathers on those long necks of theirs...this pic brings back all sorts of great memories!

You did ? They are beautiful animals, even when they are not all too friendly, sometimes

Oh yes!Β Goose-Goose (a greylag-type goose) was willing to take on even rattlesnakes to protect her "flock" of humans. She thought we were just funny-looking fellow geese. She ate chopped-up veggies and table scraps, and sat next to us when we relaxed on our front porch, and raised a huge racket if anyone came into the yard. She would wing-buffet and ruthlessly peck anything that was aggressive to us! She lived for a very long time and we literally cried for a week when she finally passed away.
Some years later I ended up with a goose chick from a feed store; one of the Chinese breed that gets the massive knob on their beaks. He was all white but had a little splotch of grey that made me think of a balding old Roman man in a toga, so I named him Socrates. Socrates would raise a racket if anything got too close to me, and even rode in the car with us and went on whitewater tubing runs down the Guadalupe River. His favorite food of all time was - I'm not kidding! -- hot peppers! The hotter, the better! He usually just honked and hissed at intruders, but he held a special vengeance in his little bird heart for cats.Β
Unfortunately, the stupidest dog in the neighborhood decided to chase him to death. I was heartbroken. We buried him with full honors and his grave stone stands to this day, alongside Goose-Goose and the numerous other pets my family has owned who have gone on to better pastures. I miss them so much. They were some crazy birds!

Thanks :-D They're a little sad, but I'm also very happy to have had these geese as pets. Maybe someday we might have another goose pet, when the kids are a little older!

Well, it'll be a while before I can do something like that, and I have to check with my housing authority to see if they will allow a goose as a pet. They are very strict about livestock as pets!Β

Guess you should have read the beginning to my story Animal Religion 101 then (not that I got any further than just writing the beginning).Β To quote:
(It is well known in legend that when the great mother bestowed characteristics on all animals she imbued into the goose all the animosity of fowl. Β Humans have oft time experienced this animosity through a sharp nip on the bum, the goose known to resolutely chase its quarry for some 5 miles in order to deliver its rebuke).Β
