Description Hey all! this is kinda my thank you gift for the 2000+ watchers!!
Not the most conventional tutorial but more of a few resources put together for something that personally helped out my artistic growth a lot, and made me a happier artist in general!

Maybe it's a little silly but the revelation that I could draw whatever way I wanted was a big one to me- I thought that the way I drew was ingrained in me and not nearly as flexible as it actually is, so I wanted to put that revelation into a tutorial of sorts? ;x;

Memes mentioned in Step 1 (along with a few others I like):      and a folder of them provided by meme-station:  meme-station.deviantart.com/ga…

List mentioned in Step 2:

(I'd recommend going through this with all of your favourite artworks, and your own art for comparison- also feel free to suggest other things to pay attention to! this is just the list I personally used)

Line:
-Is lineart present?
-What colours are the lines? is the outline a different colour to the
-how does the line behave in relation to the colours? does it stand out or blend in with the colours? is it used more as a border for the colours or part of the colours themselves?
-How thick or thin is the lineart?
-how varied is the lineart?
-Are there areas that are purposefully thicker or thinner? (for example, the outline)

anatomy/proportion:
-head size compared to body
-hand/feet size
-how the hands and feet are drawn (like mittens? without any fingers at all? realistic, detailed? squared off at the tips? do the fingers look bendy or are the joints visible?)
-how bendy/realistic the limbs are
-what's the area of focus in the stylization? (for example, is the focus to make the character's cuter and more chibi-like? as a downside, the characters may start looking the same if there's not enough variation.
-Eyes- how realistically rendered are the eyes? (note that eyes are usually quite a heavily focused on part of a style
-Are the parts of the eye (pupil and highlights etc) represented in terms of design? are they excluded or presented as solid shapes?
-how large are the facial features? are any excluded from the face entirely? why?

Colour:
-use of black (whether it is present, if black is used as shadow)
-amount of colour ( how much isn't left white/ solid black)
-amount of colour variation (mono colour vs entire rainbow)
-amount of saturation (pastel vs very saturated colours)
-how the colour is used (loose meaning - Is it directing the eye in any way? is it highlighting an element of the artwork, is it just becuase that's how something is realistically coloured? how does the colour reflect the mood of the piece?)
-Variation in colour (how large are the amounts of pastel colours or vibrant colours? are both used in the piece, and in what amounts?

Texture:
-Are there any visible textures used in the piece? Is the texture being used to create interest (patterns etc) or just to give a feel for an object? (bad wording- I mean like "with this wood texture this brown square looks like i's a box")
-Are there any patterns in the types of texture the artist uses? is it part of their style?
- What medium does this look like it was created in? Does it look different from it's actual medium? (main example being a digital artwork that looks traditional and vice versa)
-does it incorporate anything you wouldn't expect to be used as a material in art? (things like those tampon wrapper arts)

I really enjoyed this tutorial, really helpful!! I just wanted to ask about this sentence lol
"what's the area of focus in the stylization? (for example, is the focus to make the character's cuter and more chibi-like? as a downside, the characters may"
I'm really curious about the end of this sentence XD
sorry about such a weird question

OH WHOOPS LOL I DIDN"T SEE THAT uhh knowing me it was probably something about same-face syndrome? "as a downside to making charas look more cuter and chibi-like, charas may start looking the same if there's not enough variation" something along those lines

I'll correct it now- this was all from an old txt document that was very stream of conciousness at the time of writing so pff

Wow this is a really cool and helpful tutorial! I always thought people just had/happened upon their own style I didn't know you could train yourself to find and perfect a style all your own like that so that was really neat to hear. I am glad I came across this and thank you for making such a tutorial, this is the first I have seen about learning about yourself/your own style as an artist.

Keep up the good work!

P.S. Your style is so cute! Sadly, I fail at this style (similar one's that I've tried at least...)

P.P.S. Tampon wrapper martial arts?!?!

Thank you so much for making this.  I count myself as a very un-experienced artist and my style fluctuates wildly.  I've gotten to a point where I actually feel very self-conscious and discouraged about it and I've been trying to figure out how to fix my art style and skill.  So this tutorial really helps out a lot!

Nice tutorial, and but it is also interesting that, on hindsight, I and as well maybe a lot other people look at this and realize that they never have thought about draw in a certain "Style"
But it is great to see the difference.

Another great tutorial quq This is really useful! I'm still finding my own style, trying out different ones and such, and I think everyone can use a reminder that it's okay if one hasn't found their style yet. Also, I think it's a great tip to sort out ones priorities first

You are a huge inspiration and motivation to me - thank you

Imnoobbutwithheart In reply to Ekkoberry [2015-05-09 05:25:16 +0000 UTC]

Yup. Really interesting. Although to be honest never did study art like that. I grew-up just drawing whatever I want when I feel it. Although I do admit I was surprised that when I read some books that the natural thing I was doing like making a mannequin for a base was actually a basic in art (well sorta anyway base from my understanding).

Anyway as I said I'm a nooby artist anyway so reading this kinds of things are interesting to me. Although there is a high probability that I wont use them anyway since I'm a lazy guy who just draw when I'm in the mood and for fun whatever the result is >.<

Seriously I'm moody in art
