Description
FULL VIEW FOR GOODNESS SAKE!The waves rose and crashed around her, but in the centre it was calm. The eyes of the storm, and it was her. She grasped the sword tighter, once again hearing the voices whisper to her, many as one, together:
"Do you want this world to cease? Do you wish for its end?"
There were so many things she had wanted to do, to say, to experience. She would never again look upon the faces of those she loved, never hear them speak, touch them, hold them. There were so many things she had wanted to say, explain, but in the end there was only room for one word:
"Yes."
And boom, there you all got spoiled on the ending of "The apokalypsis", congratulations!
Anyway, this months entry for . This time around the theme was "swords and sorcery", with some added requirements:
- Research (duh, who wouldn't want to do research?)
- Originality (as in, original character and concept and picture etc)
- Some sort of landscape
- At least one figure
Well, I have one figure and she's all mine. This girl here is actually my oldest character, Apocalypse (Poca) among friends, and I have had her for almost 9 years. She's changed a bit since then, as she grew into her story, but there she is.
In the story (as it is now, heavily in need of a thorough check and some "re-write"), Poca is an orphan, found as a babe in the woods. She's clearly marked as a child of a "demon" (they're not really demons though, they're just like normal people only they don't have a soul, and don't age after they reach maturity) by her bright red eyes and TAIL. Unbeknownst to her, she's born for a single reason, and that is to end the world. I won't go into the reason why, as it is a long and complicated story, but it's rather ironic that her parents name her "Apocalypse", joking among themselves that she would be the end of them all.
Poca is later rescued from angry village-mobs by Vega, who's a wizard with the power of fire (among other thing, as well as some skeletons in her closet). Yes, female users of magic are called Wizards in this universe, while men are Mages. They also utilize magic differently, but as said, another story for another time. Here Poca trains to become a wizard as well, with Vega as her mentor and guide, as well as best friend.
ALL THAT ASIDE! *brushes away heaps and heaps of background story about everything* And back to business!
Apocalypse is a brown wizard, meaning that she can feel and access both white (healing and spirit) and dark (dealing with elements), which makes her an excellent teacher (most brown wizard becomes teachers at the academy), but the element she has affinity for (and greatly so) is water. Strangely enough, although she is a magic user she usually prefers to rely on her sword (this one isn't actually hers, though), as she slightly fears her magic, feeling that if she should unleash her powers completely something bad will happen. Here she finally gives in to it, feeling a great sense of relief and total freedom, finally holding back no more.
Poca doesn't like wearing dresses or skirts, but other than that she usually wears whatever it is Vega tells her to wear. Pants, loose shirts, boots (of varying sizes and lengths but with no heel), vests/corsets, and always, always her gloves (she doesn't like skin on skin contact). She prefer to wear clothes in neutral colours, black/white, brown, etc, but blue is her favourite colour, as it speaks to her. I wanted her to wear something that isn't over the top, but still looking slightly ceremonial. Also, blue and silver is also the colour of the Goddess of the Stars, Hoshiko, (as well as the God of the Moon), who Vega worships and follows.
These colours are also reflected in her sword, which is an ancient weapon forged by the God of the Moon himself, with the intent to either fight for the good of the world, or if all else fails, destroy it. It's been in the care of Vega, waiting for the day when it would be used again.
She actually cuts of her tail earlier in the story, but here it is restored, as she's finally beginning to accept who, and what, she is. At the same time her hair also starts to grow, but I decided to "capture the moment" while it's still slightly short, mainly because I draw too few short-haired girls!
I knew from the start that I wanted a watery background for Poca. I so rarely draw her using her magic, and at the time that she actually does, it'd be weird for me not to include it! The background is supposed to give a sense of "emptiness" and "space", with her as the main focus, the world slowly disappearing around her. I used two tutorials for the background, for water and for clouds:
[link]
[link]
But they're used more as point of reference how how things can be done than a tutorial. I usually prefer to just experiment with things rather than doing it point-by-point, so the result looks a bit different. Also, I went for a less realistic approach to the background than in the tutorial, because I felt a slightly more stylized look would suit the picture better. (I mean, she's hardly realistic, is she?
I also browsed through different sites both for her clothing design, as well as the design of the sword (I have sadly lost the design-idea I had for it...) these two of special interest:
[link]
[link]
So much interesting stuff there, I am definitely going to come back to both those sites!
I also learned that you can tweak the brush-settings in photoshop in new ways, so the colouring was really fun to try! The brushes acted totally different than before, so I had quite a challenge trying to make it come out right. I'm pretty happy with the result!
The pose is obviously stock photo (as if I could come up with such a difficult position on my own!
The texture I used on her "corset" is from [link] , I felt it added a nice touch to the big blue, without being too overwhelming.
Sadly, I can not link the the things were I did most research, my own notes.
In a proper DND-campaign Poca would probably be a cross-classed Sorceress/Fighter, and probably Lawful Neutral (perhaps Lawful Good).
Urgh, I think that's all?
Apocalypse/her universe (c) me.

I love this story idea and the heaps and heaps of background inforamtion - minus the spoiler
. Lets just say I'm a sucker for these types of stories and your gallery of this looks pretty awesome [and captivating].
Anyways...I loved how you protraied the "end of the world" with your color scheme of the image. I think it was very well thought because it brings a sense of an end to the image. As for the girl, Poca, I love the pose and think you executed it greatly! The highlights and the shadowing in the hair looks astonishing! The attention to light is really prominate in this as I can see clearly where your light source is at with the darker shading towards Poca's back. Overally, this is simply amazing work.

Thank you very much! Sorry for the little spoiler, if it makes you feel any better there is an epilogue, a new world is created as this one is destroyed! Sometimes you just need to start everything all fresh and new, you know?

This looks absolutely amazing. I like the background you chose, and I love how you used it to represent how the world was simply fading away and disappearing around her, though you may want to add a touch more green beneath the blue, to make it look a bit more like the world.
I also like how you kept her hair short, because it really shows off her outfit and her pose. Too long, I think, and it would have detracted from her, instead of adding to her. But here you have the perfect length! I also like her outfit a lot, because it does look simple and, at the same time, special. I especially like the design of her boots! <3
Her sword looks really nice, and I like the beautiful hilt you gave it. I find it really interesting how you chose the colors silver and blue, and I think it fits the picture really well. The bandage on her tail was a nice touch, as you explained how she cut it off, and now it's back. Overall, and awesome picture!
...Wow, that was a long comment! XD Hope ya don't mind. I just love the picture!

My goodness, mind it? If only all comments could be as long and thoughtful as this, I'd be in heaven!
I think I agree with you on the hair, too long would probably have detracted from the picture! Although I must admit it was difficult, I love drawing long, flowing hair! And I'm glad you approve of the outfit, I tried my darnedest to keep it simple. Not a trivial task when your muse keeps screaming "add more pearls, add more lace" constantly!

XD Ah, yes. The curse of loving too many little details. Mind if I borrow your muse? I need helping adding more little details to my pictures. XD
And I'm glad you like long comments! When I saw how much thought you put into this picture, I couldn't not give you a long one!

def one of yr better ones, elli. good concept and nice choices, esspecally the pose, which yes, is difficult, but you managed well.
My only major >.< 'eeep'- things i noticed was her tail looks like it's comming out of her butt cheek rather than her actual tailbone area, and the sword isnt quite straight- though i know how hard that is to accomplish from experience. The only other thing that buggs me is that water doesnt feel like water around her feet (or is it sopposed to be rocks? i cant tell...) I would have made it a little more obvious what she was standing on, and perhaps made some stormclouds or something to make the backround more detailed and interesting.
But i love her stroy and it's got an overall great feel to it! be proud, dear!

Thank you very much, I'm glad you like her and her story!
Hmm, I definitely see what you mean! I had to do some "reconstructive surgery" on her backside, and I think I forgot to move her tail along with it! I am definitely going to have to try to fix that! Thanks for noticing it for me!
The problem with standing is that she's not actually standing on anything solid. She's standing on the water. So, yeah, not quite sure how to best accomplish the "walking on the water" kind of effect. I'm afraid it's going to look "wrong" no matter what I try, because there's just no way I can make it believable in my mind, I guess?
My major beef with the sword is that the pummel is straight, the blade isn't! Funny how I only notice these kind of things afterwards. I suppose it's because I'm so busy with all the little details, I forget to look at the "big picture". I really should do something about that in general!

I know the feeling! when i did [link] she looked all fine, until i was done and i noticed her mouth was too low!
i think if you got out some good water refs that had a lot of color contrasts in it, it would look better. I have a rule that everything i do has at least 3 colors in it (ie, water would have at least white, dark blue, and green in it- and prob some light blue and purple, too. ) that way it always looks 3-d...get it, 3 colors, 3-d? heh, i crack myself up!

Yeah, I hate when that happens!
I think I shall play a little more with the water, now that I actually have an entry up it's much easier to fiddle with the small details until the deadline hits. At least now I know I won't forget to upload it or something stupid like that!
