Actually, we're seeing Mars from a high point on the dwarf planet Erebus. The humans from Earth, along with some help from an exploring alien race, pulled the planet from its lonely place in the asteroid belt.
The reason for this moving was to establish a reasonable means of restoring Mars to a habitable world. The presence of the dwarf planet as a moon would help stabilize the magnetosphere so that the atmosphere would no longer be lost. And the solid core would eventually liquefy to increase its magnetic hold on the evaporating atmosphere as well as releasing the water held in its frozen state below the planetary surface.
