This illustration was designed for one of my clients to advertise a special night of teaching on Marriage and why it is so sacred. They posted the sermon on their website so I decided to listen to it. I was so impressed with how thorough and informative it was that I decided to take down notes and share it with you lovely people. I have the impression that there are a lot of people out there who are not aware of this information, so I am doing my part to spread it.

Intro - The Authority of Scripture
Everyone has a source of authority by which they determine right and wrong. That source of authority might be their own intellect, experiences, parents, religious traditions, etc. As Christians our source of authority is scripture (not to say that we can't use intellect, etc.).

1. The creation of God - Genesis 1:26
God created man in His image, male and female. We are created in God's image meaning that we are intelligent, moral, rational beings with the ability to communicate. We are unique and separate from the rest of creation, and we have dominion over the rest of creation. They were created male and female. God commanded them to be fruitful and multiply.
In Genesis 2 God said that it is not good that man was alone. So God made Eve to complete and compliment Adam. Most of creation God made out of nothing. Adam was made out of dirt. Eve was made out of Adam.
Marriage is God's idea. Before government, or church there was marriage. Marriage is the building block of society and culture. A family can exist without a nation, but a nation cannot exist without family.

2. Commitment/covenant between man & woman - Genesis 2:24-25, Matthew 19:5, Ephesians 5:31
God's design for marriage:
Permanency: Glued together permanently
Unity: They are "one flesh" reflecting the nature of God
(Marriage is under attack because it reflects the nature of God.)
Intimacy: Sex is only to be enjoyed in the convenient relationship of marriage.

3. Control of sexual desires: 2 Corinthians 7:1-5
Sex is reserved exclusively for marriage. Sex outside of marriage is fornication and/or adultery. Pornography is also sexual immorality. If you want your life and marriage to be blessed then stay a virgin until marriage. If you have already messed up, God forgives, but scars remain. Those of you who are still virgins, stay that way until you are married! You will experience a blessing that most people will never know.
Sex is a gift from God.
Your body belongs to your spouse. Don't deny your spouse, meet their needs. Don't use sex as a weapon.
Satan corrupted sex by:
Polygamy (Genesis 4), Adultery (Gen. 16), Homosexuality (Gen. 19), Fornication (Gen. 34), Rape (Gen. 34), Incest (Gen. 38), Prostitution (Gen. 38).

4. The care of children

Children need their biological father and mother to thrive best. There are so many cultural problems because of divorce and cohabitation.
Children are a gift from God. They are a blessing.

5. The comparison to Christ and the church: Ephesians 5:32-22
God preordained the purpose for marriage to reflect the relationship of Christ and the church. Christ is the bridegroom, the church is the bride. To redefine that, or anything that changes the image of marriage is an attack on the very nature and character of God.
Christ gave Himself for the church. This was sacrificial, self-denying love, and this is how a husband must love his wife. The church is subject to Christ, and so wives are subject to their husbands in everything.

Closing - Call to action
Pray for God's mercy on the church and our country
Practice God's principles for purity, holiness and abstinence
Proclaim God's word and good news. Tell others about Jesus Christ and God's love. God loves everyone and He forgives sin.
