Description
While technically not a true warship the Bullet is the Unions smallest combat vessel for use in space. Smaller than some of the Aerospace craft in use the Bullet is a saviour drone, a completely autonomous vessel designed to be a loyal wingman to larger crewed ships. Originally introduced during the Second Golden Age the Bullet has proved a reliable and helpful tool for any Union fleet, commonly attatched to specific classes of ships in fixed numbers. Two for an escort, four for a cruiser, eight for a battleship, twelve for a dreadnought etc. (Although the Union class can literally manufacture these as it goes). The Bullets are once assigned to a vessel slaved to the ships AI and will do their upmost to protect it, including sacrificing themselves if need be. While very small the Bullet is heavily protected, mounting a potent Point defence system their main purpose is to assist in protecting against incoming fire and attack craft, its own two railguns being mainly for self defence. Bullets are very fast for Union ships, able to respond to any position they need to, including being able to rapidly accelerate in to intercept incoming rounds by throwing themselves into the shot or to ram themselves into enemy ships as a glorified kill vehicle. Most Bullets do not survive long in combat environments, but some have proven to be tenacious, some Bullets have survived for decades, still melded to their charge after all this time and having developed interested imprints almost like a basic personality. Crews treat them as lucky charms or pets, and give them all sorts of names on the battlefield. Bullets have no independent FTL and must be carried inside a ships warp or Slipspace field, and should its parent ship be destroyed the vessel will try to connect to another nearby ship. If not possible the Bullet is programmed to locate and sacrifice itself on the nearest enemy target, to inflict as much damage as possible. Or to merely shut down and await recovery.
