Description This is my entry for 's Fantasy World Contest .

In the spirit of the theme (and since I consider a lot of my unreferenced doodles to be more creative than my normal drawings anyway), I decided to do this drawing completely without references. The concept, figure, and bugs came straight from my head, so if there are a few mistakes, I apologize.

The idea is that these bugs are guiding the creature through the an otherwise impenatrable night, in case the title wasn't specific enough.

I want to note that I drew the nose strangely upturned on purpose. I promise I know how to draw a proper profile, I just wanted this creature to look as otherworldy as possible .

About 15-20 hours went into this drawing. It was done with a mechanical pencil, and a few 8B and 9B pencils. It is also quite a bit larger than a lot of my normal drawings.

I enhanced the sparkles around the bugs in Photoshop, but they are also on the original drawing (just not as bright).

One of the problems I see often with unreffed artwork is a lack of interaction between light sources and the scene. Ex., In here, the primary light source is the insect, while the lighting on the face suggests otherwise. Lighting only exists if there are no elements to refute it, and lighting will seem brighter for every agreeing element.

Just some thoughts.

Hmm.. I think I've just looked at this one too long to see the flaws anymore.

How is the lighting off? Does the light source on the face look like it's coming from somewhere else? Or are you saying it isn't reflected strongly enough on the face? I still have the picture, so I'm still able to make corrections. I just can't quite tell what you mean.
