Description
The title character of one of my all time favorite films, the 1974 rock-n-roll-comedy-horror-fantasy-musical from director Brian De Palma, which was also a darkly humorous hybrid of three famous gothic tales; "Phantom of the Opera", "Faust" and "A Picture of Dorian Gray".Winslow Leach (William Finley) was a struggling and unknown composer whose lengthy cantata based on the story of "Faust" is stolen right under his innocent, dimwitted noise by Swan, a ruthless and powerful though rather mysterious record mogul (played against type by Paul Williams). In an attempt to see Swan about the situation leads Winslow to meet and fall in love with another struggling artist, a naive but kind singer named Phoenix. Sadly Winslow's life gets far worse when Swan frames him for crimes he didn't commit and is imprisoned for them.
Now although Winslow is a pretty pleasant guy and all, he is capable of sudden bursts of extreme violent rage. And when he discovers that Swan is butchering his life's work for the opening of his rock palace dubbed the Paradise, he escapes from jail and goes on a wonderfully cartoonish rampage. But it ends in tragedy when he is brutally injured and deformed at one of Swan's record warehouses and falls into the nearby sea, presumed to be dead by the rest of the world. But like his inspirational namesake, Winslow returns from the dead so to speak, and dons a cool super villain-style bird getup to become the Phantom of the Paradise, in his attempts to have revenge against Swan and his many employees!
The Phantom himself is one of those horror movie maniacs who come off more like a comic book character (the Tall Man from the "Phantasm" films is another fine example), and thus he is a very fun and appealing design that I just had to draw myself. This is also the first of several illustrations based on NON-GIANT monster movie characters that I plan on doing in the near future, as well as another upload for Halloween 2008. And although the red collar is a little inaccurate to the original suit, I'm quite proud of how this one came out.
And because "Phantom of the Paradise" has a relatively small cult following, compared to that of another musical-macabre favorite "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", I thought I should spread the love and present just some other DA members' renditions of poor vengeful Winslow;

I could go on forever with the PotP dialog gag, but at this point both characters would be in their death throws, so thanks for the comments!

I think they actually have a more extensive convention for the film up in Canada once a year, complete with guests, film showing (of course), and sometimes musical acts…you and your friends might want to look into that.
As for me, it’s always been one of my all time favorite films, and even my brothers have recently gotten into it, so it’s nice I’m not alone in the fandom outside fine people like yourself.
I'm a Power Ranger fan as well, so I like the name.

It's similar to "The Rocky Horror Picture" show in that both are comical gothic tales with musical numbers.
But even with that said, they're quite different films, with 'hantom' holding up its entertainment energy throughout the running time.
The interesting thing about "Phantom" is way less sexual weirdness going on, hence why it got a PG rating over Rocky's R...but a PG rating in the 1970s is like a TV-14 now.
But I highly recommend "Phantom of the Paradise", at the very least for one viewing, and it's being played like crazy on Fox Movie Channel, so best to catch it there while the multiple airings last.
If you don't have that network, I can do a nice copy for any subbed Heisei Godzilla you might have (GvsKG, GvsMothra, GvsSpaceG, GvsD).

Well what about you then, from which I'll throw in Phantom as an extra to whatever films we trade among ourselves, and hence you give your friend the Phantom copy.

His eye is just creeping me out, here and in the movie.
I'm glad I finally got to see the whole movie last night. I had seen parts of it years ago, and only recently found out the title. The ending sequence still makes me laugh and go WTF at the same time.

Yeah, the climax is a bit much, especially with characters dying, which up to that point the film's 'cartoon logic' kind of prevented that (poor Beef). And yeah, I had to incorporate the freakishly noticeable pink eye...and so very happy that it works by creeping you out; Thanks!

I think the similarities are coincidental, BUT the "Digimon" franchise is one of the few anime shows to have decent monster designs, and there has been plenty of references to other movie characters within that series, so I wouldn't pass it by them.

Huh.... Somehow I've never heard of this one. Really, it seems like the kind of thing I'd have seen by now. ><
From the design, it looks like quite a ride. And it's a musical you say?

Enshohma In reply to GREGOLE [2008-11-02 22:55:27 +0000 UTC]
Yes, though less like "Rocky Horror" then say "Spinal Tap", as in the film has musical sequences because its about the music industry. But ultimately it's one of those rare films that defy most genre conventions, and as Sonokin on the Monster Zero forums said, its as wacky as "Super Inframan" in the since that it's turn up to 11!
I highly recommend it if you ever get he chance, though Fox Movie Channel aired it three times this last Friday / Halloween...should have posted this picture sooner in retrospect.

It must be a rare one, as this is only the second time I've heard of this.
The first was actually in a Buffy the Vampire Slayer book on the monsters that series had produced.

Oh, "Phantom of the Paradise" is a very fun, though very crazy, genre bending film which isn't all that obscure, and hence more then easy for me to recommend it. Still, if you can't easily rent it and push comes to shove, I can always send you a copy *wink*.
What did the Buffy Monster book have to say on the film exactly?

You're quite welcome. I certainly think you can branch out--people love new takes on their favorite images, and if you can find the right ones to tackle I think you should.
You're not alone at all--there is a small, but vocal, PotParadise cheering section.

Enshohma In reply to my-daroga [2008-11-02 01:36:26 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, that's been my thinking too, especially since giant monster fan pieces have such limited rewards.
This is mostly due to the sad fact that the majority of Godzilla fans surprisingly hate anything Ultraman and Power Ranger related...can't really blame them on the latter though, but Ultraman?!?! One of the most enjoyable ANYTHINGS ever created, at a convenient and never boring half-hour format?!?!
That rant aside, the only problem I have now is what unusual movie characters would fit in my style. I have a small list, but open to suggestions for the moment, if you want to drop any?

my-daroga In reply to Enshohma [2008-11-02 18:41:26 +0000 UTC]
I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with Ultraman at all! But as to things that might "fit" your style, I guess I was thinking the more stylized, less naturalistic figures. Those with some "fun" included. Not necessarily cartoony, but those that could benefit from a lack of realism. Which, technically, could be anyone if you do it right.
But let's see... It might be fun to do something Caligari-related, like Cesare. Sweeney Todd, though he's far better known now than before. I'll try to think of some others.

Enshohma In reply to my-daroga [2008-11-02 23:22:51 +0000 UTC]
Ceasar is an awesome idea, with the wide eyes and slim, almost anime-like persona. I'll hold off on Sweeny Todd, simply because as good as that movie is, fan art for it, especially in the said anime-like style, has been done a lot lately. Oh, since you can't talk about "Phantom" without mentioning "Rocky Horror", how does Columbia as a illustration strikes you?
And if you know any good image heavy sites on the character, how about Lon Cheney's original Phantom (surprised you didn't bring that guy up)?
WARNING: EXTREME NERD RANT AGHEAD
Ultraman is a long running, over 40 years old superhero franchise in Japan, usually involving giant silver-skinned alien protectors who help Earthly defense agencies against monsters and evil alien invaders. The format is almost the same in each show, but unlike Godzilla, the multiple episodes and half-hour formats allow more wild ideas and storylines to be delt with. An excellent example of that said experimentation is the current entry dubbed "Ultra Galaxy: Daikaiju Battle", which is like "Pokemon", but fully live action and staring the many past monster characters of the franchise.
And that has been your crash course in 'Ultraology'...but again, I only brought up that series as an example of how limited the rewards with giant monster fan art can be. Even if Ultraman wasn't so hard to come by in the states, the Godzilla community here would still not give a crap.

I think Columbia would be great--she's so colorful. Actually, any of them.
I confess I didn't mention Phantom because I'm a little obsessed (with all of them) and am curbing my impulse to blather about him to everyone I meet. But absolutely, Chaney's anything would be fun. And his Phantom is a great image. Were you looking for any sort of pics in particular? There are some here but not very high-res.
I'll keep Ultraman in mind for the next time I'm out of things to check out. But I completely understand the pain of small fandoms. And love for obscure things.

Sorry for this belated reply, but the link you gave, which although featuring small images, is still a great help, and in case you don't know, the silent "Phantom of the Opera" will air on TCM come Thursday, thanks to guest programmer Ray Bradbury...though I make mention of it on my blog (among way too many other nerd things), we all should check our local listings to be sure.
I'm now committed to Columbia for early 2009 (have a lot of other projects to do before then), and I may take a crack at the Lon Chaney Phantom in his 'crimson skull' outfit while I'm at it. Thanks for the link, and I'll try to be quicker with the next reply.

Sorry for my late reply! Thanks for the note re: POTO on TCM. I don't have cable, but I have the DVD anyway, though it's nice to let others know so they can catch it. I think Bradbury presented a few other favorites of mine at the same time.
Anyway, the Red Death outfit would be great! And offer the interesting challenge of using a lot of different reds, or something. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Thank you so very much Daroga, but again it will have to wait till mid-2009 before I can really get started on the non-giant-sized character fan art (I have way too many other things to color and uploads first, though I hope you enjoy these upcoming pictures as well).
Ray Bradbury had several good film choices, but it's a little disheartening that he's showing his age and can't speak as beautifully as he did in interviews when I was growing up...and even then he still had white hair! Though it was a big surprise that "Something Wicked This Way Comes" began life as a possible movie for Gene Kelly long before it became a novel, then back into a 1980s Disney film.
Gene Kelly as Mr. Dark...the mind boggles?

I completely understand that; I always have several projects going at once. I look forward to what you come up with.
Bradbury does seem like he's been "old" for awhile, but I suppose it especially looks that way when you're young. I had no idea about Kelly and "Something Wicken..."--that's pretty unthinkable.

The yellow lights, which works a lot better then I expected, is based on the end-title font from the film, while the crazy bloodshot eye was inspired by the publicity photos in which William Finley's muscle tissue disturbingly stood out.
I agree, Winslow is a great character and it's a shame he's not right up there with Ash from "Evil Dead" and similar cult film characters. And of course, thanks for the nice feedback.
