Description The title character of one of my all time favorite films, the 1974 rock-n-roll-comedy-horror-fantasy-musical from director Brian De Palma, which was also a darkly humorous hybrid of three famous gothic tales; "Phantom of the Opera", "Faust" and "A Picture of Dorian Gray".

Winslow Leach (William Finley) was a struggling and unknown composer whose lengthy cantata based on the story of "Faust" is stolen right under his innocent, dimwitted noise by Swan, a ruthless and powerful though rather mysterious record mogul (played against type by Paul Williams). In an attempt to see Swan about the situation leads Winslow to meet and fall in love with another struggling artist, a naive but kind singer named Phoenix. Sadly Winslow's life gets far worse when Swan frames him for crimes he didn't commit and is imprisoned for them.

Now although Winslow is a pretty pleasant guy and all, he is capable of sudden bursts of extreme violent rage. And when he discovers that Swan is butchering his life's work for the opening of his rock palace dubbed the Paradise, he escapes from jail and goes on a wonderfully cartoonish rampage. But it ends in tragedy when he is brutally injured and deformed at one of Swan's record warehouses and falls into the nearby sea, presumed to be dead by the rest of the world. But like his inspirational namesake, Winslow returns from the dead so to speak, and dons a cool super villain-style bird getup to become the Phantom of the Paradise, in his attempts to have revenge against Swan and his many employees!

The Phantom himself is one of those horror movie maniacs who come off more like a comic book character (the Tall Man from the "Phantasm" films is another fine example), and thus he is a very fun and appealing design that I just had to draw myself. This is also the first of several illustrations based on NON-GIANT monster movie characters that I plan on doing in the near future, as well as another upload for Halloween 2008. And although the red collar is a little inaccurate to the original suit, I'm quite proud of how this one came out.

And because "Phantom of the Paradise" has a relatively small cult following, compared to that of another musical-macabre favorite "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", I thought I should spread the love and present just some other DA members' renditions of poor vengeful Winslow;

There are a whole lot more fan pieces then just these few, so please use the DA search engine. And of course, you can't do the Phantom justice, without mentioning his insidious use of a toilet plunger:

I want to watch this movie, I saw some clips, but are there explicit sex scenes? Like, where you can actually see them doing it? I'm worried.

Have you seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show?

If so, than I can assure you that Phantom of the Paradise is a more tame version of that film though still strong for 1970s PG rating (harsh language, not-too-explicit sexual situations, raunchy humor, violence) that wouldn't fly today.

The so-called sex scenes you see are mostly fully clothed people making out heavily and shouldn't be too disturbing though, again, PG rating from the 1970s.

Here's an extensive but barley spoiler free of Phantom that may help you further in your watching decision: youtu.be/VcWeYy96Joc

I love love love it. Like I adore Winslow and PotP.

I love the first Phantasm film actually - how are the sequels? I liked the weird 'phantasmagoric' tone of it. Haha

Thanks so much for the comments and favorite here.

I fully agree with your movie preference here, and as mentioned before, my beef with "Rocky Horror" is how it looses most of its momentum after poor Eddy get's axed in the first act. "Phantom" on the other hand, remains energetic till the end, despite the small section of Winslow's suicidal depression after Phoenix and Swan hook up.

You have to remember, that this was a PG rated movie from the 1970's, so the content is a little extreme, like a light TV-14 level for today.

But it's more of a horror / dark fantasy comedy than a straight horror film, and there really isn't much blood, beyond the climax.

Despite you very reasonable concerns, "Phantom of the Paradise" is still very worth checking out, if only for the offbeat characters alone, like Winslow, Swan, and good old Beef.

Bahaha I love it! Phantom of the Paradise is amazing. It, Rocky Horror and possibly Shock Treatment are my favourite rock musicals.

Enshohma In reply to Madame-Enfer [2012-01-04 06:29:36 +0000 UTC]

I hate to admit it, but those are like the only truly fun rock musicals, though in fairness, I have not seen "Shock Treatment" myself.

I've been revisiting, and in some cases, even out right re-doing a lot of my older works, and Phantom here may be among such projects. It will remain fairly the same, but done at a bigger size, and with my improved coloring skills.

I too love the film, and its title character, who I kind of relate with, considering how hard it is to be an artist and not get too screwed over. Thanks so much for the kind compliment!

Madame-Enfer In reply to Enshohma [2012-01-04 07:13:09 +0000 UTC]

Well yeah... I *wanted* to like Repo! - I wanted to bad - but even with a Joan Jett cameo it didn't make the cut (haha, cut).

I got my local cult movie-theatre to put this on their screening list, can't wait to see it properly this time.

I'm a musician myself, and though I haven't yet been really screwed over, I'm aware of the cut-throat nature of the industry I'm on the edge of. I'm a bit of a band geek too and know some tales of woe. Poor Winslow, a victim of the business process.

And your picture captures him prefekto!

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Enshohma In reply to Madame-Enfer [2012-01-08 04:18:45 +0000 UTC]

Never seen Repo, though based on your 'cut' gag, I can only imagine what happens to poor Jett.

LOL, I think the tragic circumstances of Winslow Leech though all of us aspiring artists a much needed lesson in protecting ones work, though even as a nine year old, even I was shocked by him giving away his entire script! I've had minor success in comic books, and thankfully my bad moments with producers were more than survivable, but yeah, no one should get screwed over that harshly, and I will think only the best in your endeavors my friend...though I doubt you'll indirectly meet The Devil anytime soon either.

Thanks for the kind compliments, and just out of curiosity, what are you other favorite cult films?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Madame-Enfer In reply to Enshohma [2012-01-08 07:39:56 +0000 UTC]

Haha oh not her, but the whole thing is about surgery and stuff. There is lots of cutting going on. I liked the premise, and a lot of the visual style, but I disliked most of the cast and the characters, and the music was at best mildly amusing and at worst intolerable.

Well, at least I know now to get my face caught in a record press if nothing else, haha! Thanks, and good luck with your career! Let the film guide you and you won't go wrong

No problem! And I'm always happy to expound...

Well, films I love include Velvet Goldmine, Smithereens, the Cabinet of Dr Caligari, Andy Warhol's Frankenstein and Dracula, the City of Lost Children, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars: The Motion Picture, Wild at Heart by David Lynch, Faster Pussycat Kill Kill! Night Of The Living Dead, Dark City, any Mario Bava film (especially Lisa and the Devil, the Whip and the Body, Blood and Black Lace or Black Sunday), Suspiria, Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains, the Blues Brothers, the Commitments. You should see Shock Treatment. Just don't think of it as a Rocky sequel - it's not, that's a common misconception. As you may or may not know, it stars Jessica Harper and about half of the original Rocky Horror cast.

OMG I LOVE this movie, but I'm from Winnipeg, so pretty everyone here has seen it and loves it. But whats great is that with my generation all our parents saw it when it first came out, so all of us saw it at a pretty young age, and it only gets better the older i get.

Enshohma In reply to founten [2012-01-04 06:49:00 +0000 UTC]

There was a magical time in my childhood (8-11) where my viewing diet consisted of old school monster and sci-fi movies. And unlike "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" which was kind of introduced to me through my local Fox affiliates' TV airing, I purposely sought out "Phantom" on my own, based on all the awesome photos I had seen of the title anti-hero, from library books. And was not at all disappointment when I rented the VHS through said library as well!

"Phantom" is still a fixture of my movie collection, and I'm happy that it's still gaining fans beyond the magical Mecca of Winnipeg (seriously though, why did it become such a phenomena there and no where else?).

Recently my own brothers stumbled upon the film, and came to like it a lot in turn; but considering the movie's dark humor, music, and offbeat, almost cartoon sensibilities and characters, you kind of get an idea how me and my two siblings are like, creative and personality wise ([link] ).

Thanks so much for the kind compliments, and I apologize for the late reply.

Thanks so much for the kind words; its a very fun movie if you ever get a chance to see it, and willing to send you a copy if your really, really desperate (especially if you can do some clean-ups via Live Trace for me, that'd be a nice little trade). But other than that, the Fox Movie Channel usually airs "Phantom of the Paradise" around Halloween time, and of course, it might be readily available on NetFlix or Amazon.

Again, it might be my own personal tastes, but I still recommend it, and prefer it over "Rocky Horror"...but than again, I think "Tron" and "Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster" is choice entertainment, so beware!

And all of this because of a monster that goes by the name of Swan...
Very good rendition of the Phantom's looks. Still, I never saw the film as a horror one, but more as a drama mixed with a satiric vision of music altogether, a good and grotesque sense of humour when necessary and a lot of homages to Hitchcock, as it in the style of the great Brian De Palma.

Enshohma In reply to RatkosCorner [2012-01-04 06:56:33 +0000 UTC]

Terribly belated reply, but I personally believe it's one of De Palma's best films, and kind of sad he didn't do more macabre comedies or genre bending ventures like this one. I agree, the film can't be labeled as horror, even though its in a similar vein of some of the more fantastical monster movies.

"Phantom of the Paradise" is one of those films that certainly deserve a bigger cult following than it does now; its a true example of genre-bending at its wackiest and most entertaining, while remaining fun amongst even its darker bits. I know its against popular opinion, but I prefer this movie over "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (which kinds of loose a lot of momentum once Meatloaf gets axed), and wish we could have seen more such fantastic lunacy from director and writer Brain DePlama.

I too was introduced to the film at an early age, when MonsterVision still aired on TNT, and you could find a host of weird movies playing in the dead of night...though to be accurate, I saw "Phantom" through a library rental.

I wish you luck on your fan piece to the movie, while I contemplate another "Phantom" piece later on. Though, I'm curious if you've seen the alternate version of the illustration above?

yea i did.its awesome.thanks man.you are 1 of 4 other people that i know of that has ever seen this amazing movie.and i have always thought that the phantom of the paradise was the better movie.the rocky horror was fun but the phantom had like a deep meaning behind it.it was just a mind blowing movie that sticks with you on a kinda spiritual level.i think it touches creative people more because we can relate to it better.we love our creations the way that we would love our children, and thats because in a way,our art is our children.with each pic we produce,we try harder to do better and evolve.kinda like raising a child.i raise my daughter, even though she is only 2,the same way i write or paint or draw.i use the same basic method.i question myself how can i do better.i feel that the phantom loved his music the way that he would care for his own child.there are to many things that makes that movie so amazing, but i guess the greatest thing about it,is the passion.
