Description Chosen by you guys in a temporary tie from a recent poll (please vote on the new current one HERE ), comes my personal re-design for The Guardian from the 1978 Italian sci-fi cult classic Starcrash.

As the name implies, The Guardian was the statue-like robot protector and destroyer for a race of extraterrestrial Amazons under the leadership of Queen Corelia (played by Nadia Cassini), all of whom in league with Count Zarth Arn, intergalactic despot and the film's main villain. The Guardian is activated against the heroic smuggler Stella Star and her robot officer friend Elle while escaping the Amazons' underground city. The golden gynoid giantess soon meets her end by the heroes spaceship and its laser weaponry from above.

The Guardian is a direct homage to both Talos from Jason and The Argonauts (1963) and The Maschinenmensch from Fritz Lang's classic Metropolis (1927).

Unfortunely, however, the stop-motion model used for The Guardian is pitiful looking, like a bootleg wax candle figure of 3CPO, hampered further by some stiff animation despite best efforts from the otherwise talented Armando Valcauda, special effects director for Starcrash.

My version of The Guardian was heavily inspired by the aforementioned influences along with an unused test model / design from scantly seen pre-production photos (SEE Shout! Factory's excellent DVD release). The glowing eyes and orbs radiating green energy were inspired by Queen Corelia's own eye-beams used to activate The Guardian as well as ancient Greek legends of the Amazons' single breasted chests or their unique breast plates that gave off such an impression.

I had a lot of fun drawing this one and extremely tempted to do more fanart based around Starcrash and its many colorful and campy heroes, villains, and monsters.
