Thirty Days of FandomDay One: Favorite Anime Series
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
While I was working on this one and cursing out Simon for being so damn hard to draw when I had a brilliant idea. Why not make all of these coloring pages? So that’s what I’m going to do. For the next thirty days, I’m going to be (and/or try to) post one coloring page a day and let you guys out there color them. This is only being half lazy on my part. I actually wasn’t going to be doing full illustrations, but since I don’t have to color them, I’m going to force myself to put way, way more effort into the lineart so that you guys can have wonderful coloring pages to work on during math class, on the bus, in the office, upside down, underwater and on the moon. I will be posting a journal with all of this information in it as well.
For information on this series you can visit the wiki-page here [link]
As to why Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann my favorite anime series, well… When I was in college, my sophomore year I believe, I was making a lot more friends than I did my freshman year. This was mostly because I actually left my apartment sophomore year, but we’re not here to discuss my social behaviors. One of these new and wonderful friends loved to hold me hostage in her apartment and make me watch random episodes of random animes. She did this with Kyo Kara Maoh, D. Grayman (which is probably the only one she showed me that I didn’t care too much for and never got into) and of course, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. But she only showed me the first episode (which believe me, that’s enough to get you hooked), part of episode three (Kamina VS. Viral, hell yes) and the episode Kamina dies. Thanks for that, Mari. Thank you, so much. But yes, I have her to thank for many, many things. The most which was getting me back into anime.
Despite the fact that Simon looks a little wonky, I’m really proud of this one. All the lines were inked in black sharpie and everything was done freehand, so there’s no tracing what so ever. I did use some reference pictures, all of which I found on random sites all over Google and don’t have the links for them. There was one site that was an awesome source for Yoko pics, but seeing as how Yoko didn’t even make it into this picture wasn’t really useful. And since Adult Simon is way hotter than Bitty Simon, there wasn’t a lot of official BS (lol.. acronym fail..) pics that I could use. I did find a lot of beautiful fanart, which is now tucked neatly away in my TTGL folder for me to drool over later.
I just want to take a moment to go over some of the other characters, who in my opinion were the backbone of the show and were the real reason I kept watching even after Kamina died. Since Kamina is my favorite character of the series (and my favorite character always dies), I wanted to put him on here, but I felt it best to leave it as is with Simon and Boota with the flaming skull logo in the background and the obligatory GURREN LAGANN in the corner there. Originally, I had planned on having Adult Simon in the background, but Bitty Simon’s hair pretty much covered the entire sketch of him that had been done and I said screw it and moved on. And I’m kind of glad I did, because he looks so happy and cute with his second best buddy in the world riding on his shoulder ready to tackle the surface world in their teeny tiny gunman. Obviously, this was before Kamina died.
Other characters that I really fell in love with were Bitty Rossiu, Leeron, the twins Gimmy and Darry, and the most scantily clad woman with the most personality, Yoko Littner. Yoko was a real surprise for me, because from all of the arkwork I had seen of her, I was not too thrilled about her taking up space in my anime. The tiny little hardcore feminist in me wanted to beat her with her own gun, but as I watched more episodes, I began to realize something that I wasn’t entirely sure I was ready for. Here, standing before me in her flaming bra and leather short shorts was a mighty warrior of a woman who could put Kamina (the manliest thing in the world) in his place. What’s more, and you’ll love this, she has a personality. And I’m not talking the generic girly-girly or the angry-with-the-world-because-she’s-forever-PMS-ing. No, Yoko is much more than that. She is The Woman. A woman with the power of any man yet just as fragile as anyone else. She beats up on all of her brothers, yet is motherly and gentle. She packs a punch and sends Beastmen to their graves, yet she can be broken by a simple kiss. Now, I have seen a lot of scantily clad women in my day, and not all of them anime characters mind you, but none of them had such a well-rounded and believable personality. Sure, you have Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop, but Yoko had something that Faye didn’t. Class. There I said it. Faye has no class. You can proceed with the brick throwing.
Moving on…
Second only to Kamina, is my next favorite character, Bitty Rossiu. Why not Adult Rossiu? Because that Rossiu can go burn in a kerosene fire. Anyway, Bitty Rossiu had this endearing naïve charm about him that I really admired. He willingly left his underground village to journey with Dai Gurren Lagann (the name of their team, chosen by Kamina). He was raised by the Priestof the village, who’s name I forget, who taught him the will of God and how all things were created by Him and blah blah blah, you get the point. Well, the Priest had this book, which we are led to believe is the Bible, and when Rossiu leaves, the Priest gives it to him as a parting gift. Rossiu tells him that he can’t read and he replies with a nonchalant “Neither can I.” At that point, I would have taken that book and slapped a bitch but that’s just me.
I’m going to let you guys on a little known secret about Rossiu. Secretly, Rossiu is the long lost little brother of Chang Wufei from Gundam Wing. But don’t tell anybody!! This is like the tippy top of the top secret list of secrets. Dead serious.
Getting back to the other characters I like, let’s take a minute to talk about Leeron. What can you say about someone like Leeron? Well… You can call him Ron, or you can call him “Beautiful Queen,” as he prefers to be called. In the anime, there’s a line he says that’s something along the lines of “I’m neither a man nor a woman,” and then he goes on about how Kamina can find out if he wants to. Which he doesn’t, but that’s beside the point. Leeron is the mechanic, so he works tirelessly on everything he does and won’t sleep until the job is finished. And he loves being the sick son of bitch creeper that he is. Which is also why I adore him. Keep doing what you’re doing, Ron. We love you!
Now, I don’t see a lot of fanart out there for two very important characters. Gimmy and Darry are twins from the same village as Rossiu, who were both forced out because Father Magin (I looked it up) is a douche and will not allow the village to exceed a population of fifty. So every time there’s a birth, they hold a lottery and whoever get a black straw is sent to the “Chosen Land” AKA vast barren wasteland of death. Father Dipshit rigged the lottery so that the orphaned twins would be sent to the surface. Real nice guy this one. Well, what I love about Gimmy and Darry is 1.) they’re twins, of which I have a huge weakness for, and 2.) they are polar opposites. Gimmy, the boy, is hyper to the point where you don’t know if you should shove Ritalin down his throat or hook him up to the master switch box outside and never have to pay for electricity again. Darry, the girl, is cute and adorable and just sits there and watches as her darling brother jumps up and down aimlessly on the bed and hits his head on the ceiling. Though there’s a lot more to Gimmy’s personality that just makes you appreciate Darry even more. It’s the reassurance that you only have to take one child to the emergency room every five minutes.
Though I would like to go into the dynamics of the bad guys of the story, I think I’ve done enough damage to the world’s supply of bandwidth, so I will leave you with these parting words of wisdom:
“DON’T BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! BELIEVE IN ME! BELIEVE IN ME WHO BELIEVES IN YOU! YOUR DRILL IS THE DRILL THAT WILL PIERCE THE HEAVENS!” -- Kamina
