That look really cool. I like the liitle man there for scale. By the way, is the terran Mt St Helans?

Thank you! And yes, the terrain is a 4097x4097 DEM of Mt. St. Helens. A very excellent terrain to work with.

Besides the falling asteroid streak looking a bit fake, you made up for it with the great effects on the splatter Good job guys

Wow...very awesome piece.

The terragen work--amazing. It actually looks pretty realistic [something that, to me, terragen only sometimes achieves]. Good shadows, lighting, texture, etc. One thing though--the left side of the pic, or at least the left side of the mountains, needs to be shadowed, I think...it seems that the light is coming from the right, or at least more to the right, and that the right side fits nicely, but the left seems slightly too bright. Maybe that's just me.

Planets--awesome..nothin' much to say there...great textures, glows, shadows...

I -love- the nebula! It's extremely realistic, but even so, not a style nebula you see very often [except in Hubble photos]...I guess people just don't attempt to do them. You've pulled it off, especially with the smaller portion [the larger one may be a tad too blurry around the dark line in the middle]...nice colors, as well.

The meteor trail, as someone else has said, could be a little smokier at the end instead of just fading out...the impact, though, is pretty good [I usually -hate- meteor impacts]...so kudos to y'all! Perhaps a little 'spikey' [looks more like brushstrokes] but still pretty good. The trails coming out of the original impact should probably cast shadows on the ground below. The smaller impact on the left [not the far left one behind the ridge] might be slightly blurry, so it looks a little less realistic. Great action, though, on all the impacts...looks like it's happenin' now.

Hehe, the little person...very, very nice touch, though I might have chosen someone not running--he seems to be running towards the impact.

Overall, it's a great piece! The only thing that bugs me about the piece as a whole is the way everything fits together; some of it seems a bit random. The nebula, for instance, seems to contrast everything else in the picture, making it a little off-balance. Also, the colors seem a bit random as well--the land and meteor/impact don't mix with the space part very well because of the color gap--one's dull and one's bright. Perhaps creating better transitions and positioning things so that the nebula doesn't take the focus away from the impact [which it's doing for me] and matching the colors would create a better composition as a whole in the future.

Great collab, guys! Keep up the awesome work!

Thank you very much! I think this is the most detailed comment I have ever received...and I really appreciate it!!

About the lighting on the terrain...it is coming from the right...at about 4 o'clock I believe...but the sun is somewhat higher in the sky...hence the left side of the mountain is still able to be lit. But the viewer doesn't necessarily know that so I definitely see your point.

I love the planets...and adore that nebula too, probably for the point you made about it looking like a Hubble-style nebula.

Thanks again for your comments and critiques of this piece...they are very much appreciated.

The terragen looks as good as it does because that is Mount Saint Helens after the eruption. Not that it doesnt look good or discredits piece, but it just means they didnt actually create the whole terrain.

environaut In reply to Zeichnete [2005-08-11 21:20:14 +0000 UTC]

Using a DEM will of course bring the most 'realism' to a terragen render in terms of the terrain just because, well, it IS real and hence has all the natural look of a real terrain (something that's difficult to achieve so well with most terrain genterators). That's what I was going for in this render anyway was a bit of realism...thanks!

Yep...that's a for sure! Lots of nice stuff to look at here. I will only point out one thing I think could possibly be better, and that's the blazing trail from the meteorite. I think it would look much better with some smoke trailing just before impact and fading back into the fire. Other than that awesome work!
