[ Two different strides, side by side. Opposing directions, a whole difference in life.. ]

Comment : I like to think our career choices can ultimately be boiled down to either one of the two: 1) The person we wanted to be, and dreamed to be, and are becoming -or- 2) The person we settled with instead.

(note) Just personally, the man in color is singled out because I believe him to represent what we want and dream to be..his counterpart / the rest of the people in the image all represent that which we settle with instead..

I think I can see that . . . but maybe some people have three? I see a middle one for myself--I long to be able to have my art and teaching as equal halves of me. But, there's only so much time in the day. I really like this concept though. Great job with this.

Finely expressed idea.
From the technical point of view, how do you colour a part of a picture leaving the rest b&w?

Well, there are about 2-3 different ways I know of how to do it in Photoshop.. (i'll tell you which way I think turns out best)

You use the quick mask function (this will allow you to use the brush and other tools to make selections of things, in red areas). I start out with the "brush" mode, zoom in generally 120-150% original image size, and just trace around the areas of the person/object/thing you want to remain in color. You can play around with the hardness / size of the brush as it fits the details of what you're trying to trace around. Once you get a rough trace, switch back to regular mode and out of "quick mask" and use the freehand selection tool to quickly fill in all the middle / main section (since that part doesn't need to be detailed)..

Hope that helps!! (there's probably tons of tutorials and other better ways to do it on the net..I have just come to be good at doing it thsi way, and I like the result)

Are you colorful?

i totally agree with what you said. most people would probably fall into either of the two catergories. and what a way to describe how you feel- through photography. great job!
