I'm experimenting with glow/illuminate effects for my next wall.The download file is a GIMP source XCF file. Download it and open it in GIMP to see what kinds of layers I used (especially note the Layer modes -- that's where the magic is!)
Overall, I think I've come up with a usable technique for the desired effect. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the left-hand nova to illuminate the model's face without overpowering the right-hand nova, and consequently ruining the effect ⌐_⌐
