It was not that she had been scared. It was not that she had decided to back out and never do it. Something had simply held her back. What that was she would never know, but there was no reason to wonder about it - she could not go back and change it. She could only move forward and do it now, which was exactly what she was going to do.

The pearl doe had never been particularly open about any plans she had. Secretive was not the right word to use about her, but she simply did not talk about things she was not completely set on or sure of. She could blabber and talk loudly, certainly, but it had never really felt right to do so. And yet, last year she had opened up about what she wished to do. She had not gone around and told everyone, but others knew. It was not a widespread knowledge, certainly not something known herdwide, but it was still known by most that surrounded her. It was not spoken about though. No, it was a silent knowledge that was not discussed.

The silence was just one of many contrasts between Garnet and the current Queen. When she had rose to take the power as Queen, it had been on everyone’s lips. Everyone had whispered about the missing Queen and how fitting it would be for the King’s mate to rise to the throne. And rise she had. Garnet had been excited to begin with - a new regent always spelled the beginning of something. Sadly, it had not been the beginning of something Garnet came to approve of. Instead it had become something she wanted to end - something she wanted to fix.

She knew it was tradition, but Garnet had no intention to kill the current Queen. Deyanira, no matter how much Garnet disapproved of her, had important information and experience, and she was a mother. She was more than a poor Queen and as such she did not deserve to die. Should it come to it, Garnet would not hesitate though. Today would be the end of Deyanira’s reign.

Instead of killing her, she was going to have her march right into Widow’s Hollow and declare herself stepping down, whether she wanted to do it or not. There was no if, only whether it was going to be voluntarily or not.

Drawing a breath, Garnet closed her eyes to calm herself down. Her heart felt like it was going to burst. She was an experienced doe by now, she knew her way around a fight and everything else, but that did not stop this from being different. Today she was setting her life on the line for the good of the herd.

Between the trees, outside of a small glade where the light of dusk shone, she spotted her. Holding her head high, she made her way towards her, their green eyes meeting. One pair warm, the other cold; another little contrast of theirs.

“Queen Deyanira, today is your last day as Queen…”

Aaaand it's official, Garnet finally challenges Deyanira for the position as the Queen of Blackwood.
If anyone is in doubt, she's going to fight Deyanira for the position. She's hoping to possess her though and march her out to show everyone that she's stronger though.
