Description
"Humanity needs dreamers, for whom the disinterested development of an enterprise is so captivating that it becomes impossible for them to devote their care to their own material profit."
--Marie Curie
25th Century Curie class Starship. The Curie Class was created to fill a science / exploratory role in Starfleet, while being equipped to defend itself unlike its ancestor, the Oberth Class survey ship.
The design of the Curie class was developed in the 2360's when Starfleet was based more in exploration than defense - before the Borg invasions, the Cardassian occupation by the Dominion, or the brief but violent Klingon Wars. Still the ASDB at the time considered it neither armed enough, fast enough, nor tough enough for service, so the production was delayed indefinitely.
Five years after the Dominion War Starfleet had a need for new ships to replace the countless losses during the last years wars. The concept of the Curie class was re-worked, because it had to be tougher. So, after two re-designs that accounted for modern technological advancement, they had accepted the third revision after upped the stakes by adding sufficient tactical systems and defensive ablative armour to survive the simulators.
While the new Nova Class had gradually started to replace the Oberths, most of which were well over a century old and still performing close to specs, a larger starship was required whose role would be similar to the shorter-range science vessels.Β The recently hostile galactic environment also dictated a greater slant toward defensive capability, for both new classes.
Double the size of the old Oberth class, the Curie class ended as a Science ship by heart, but was capable to defend itself when it should be necessary.

Will do, how many decks is the ship?

19 from my calculation. But can be more, when the pylons have living space too.

A great design for sure. Has this mix out of utilitarian and explorer, would have definitely fitted in any of the shows.

I always thought, the Oberth class was a underrated design, so i love this upgrade.

Yeah, agreed. As far as small science ships go, it was definitely well made. Interestingly enough, whenever we saw one in a show or movie, they were in trouble. Whether it was theΒ Tsiolkovsky, or the Vico, or the PegasusΒ (to name a few), either the crew went insane, something exploded, or they got stuck in a rock. I'm not even going to mention the Grissom...
The Curie-class looks great though.

Its propably because the writers were at the need of a Red Shirt ship, and the Oberth class is the smallest and weakest proper starship in the fleet, so the probability it found trouble is higher as on larger ships.

That's as good or reasonable explanation as any. As a real world reason I suppose, pre-CGI days, there was somewhat a limit on models, so a lot of re-use happened which is why we regularly saw Oberth, Constellation and Excelsior class vessels.

She's an amazing ship that I would be proud to serve on. You put together a great write up on her.
