Description ...don't ask me if there's a back story or not, I have no idea what's going on either
I like the character design so I may come up with a story someday maybe. Excuse me with my linguistically retardedness if I got the russian on the robot wrong ;;>__> (not my fault, blame the internet and my laziness) You see fancy european steam punk but you never know if the other nations are in the phenomena (if there is I've personally never seen it) so here's the soviet union version. Can't wait to work on other nations + steam punk since it worked pretty good.

So he created a Russian combat robo-bear? Then the invasion of the world by robotic lifeforms has begun. Who knew it would have taken the form of such a vicious creature with metal claws and fangs no less. Soon it will turn on its creator and tear him to pieces and replicate more of his kind. They will for weapons and enslave humanity demand us to pay tribute by giving them fresh fish oil. Prepare yourselves! For the time is almost near!

Why are all the Russian robots always so awesome? This guy looks like it's going take something down. I could imagine him being part of an international robot competition. He'd win with his pure bear-ness.

In USA, you break machines. In Mother Russia, MACHINES BREAK YOU!

Thank you! Eh not really? I know I understand painter a TAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD bit more so maybe? I dunno I feel like I'm getting too close to the "too" realistic realm for my line art and it feels... awkward. I'm having trouble trying to find a good coloring style to fit the lines and it's annoying as hell.

But glad you liked it!

Nakarie [2009-05-29 14:53:38 +0000 UTC]

Atch, clearly I'm missing out on great stuff with the APH. ;3;
Although I don't see that changing anytime soon...*sigh*

But that doesn't mean I can't be excited about the other countries' steam punk thing-a-majigs!
I don't know much about Russia, but why polar bear? :0

Anyhow, now I get to the technicals:
I'm gonna go ahead and take a page from your book because the word "Flat" lighted up in my head when I first saw it (Although I don't think it's as flat as my surgery fail piece. 8D; ) I had another paragraph written here before I decided to take this into photoshop and see if my hunch was more or less right, here's the result of some crude slapped-on shading: [link]

So yeah, I think the problem is the shading on the subjects, the background is beautiful and I can't get over how lovely the snow looks (also for some reason I'm extremely fond of the way you did the smoke the machine is bellowing out). More CONTRAST on your bear would do the trick, especially on that paw that's reaching out towards you, I felt that the effect was muted due to the shading. OR you could just exaggerate the perspective there whichever way. <:/

On the other hand, the Russian might be too dark in places, although I'm generally referring to the dark browns of his clothes, mainly on his pants. I'm sure there's some great details there, but I can't see them because of how dark it is.

By the way, did I mention secondary lighting to you before? Or using analogous colors to shade...uh, those end up as the same thing sometimes. xDD; But instead of choosing just a darker or lighter value for shade, try shading with another color to add a little more to the piece. :d

Well, that's pretty much what I have to say. o3o Still love the idea though, I did chuckle when I saw it, and mucho excited for other nations~ >:3

EvilApple513 In reply to Nakarie [2009-05-31 21:21:41 +0000 UTC]

LOLOLOL don't worry it's my original character that I apparently failed at making him look original enough? I dunno I thought he looked different than the Russia in APH. But then again he looks pretty generic so I'll put more details in the character to look more original

Anywayz... that's not the point of this reply...

YOU

HAVE

NO

IDEA

HOW

MUCH

I

LOVE

YOU!!!!!!!

I mean, you went as far as modifying my pic to show what I could've done?! The time... your precious TIME!!! Thank you SO much and I learned SOOO much from your example. I needed to put two more steps of effort into my works and you showed me that well...

I'm still too anxious about color since I'm too comfortable in the black and white realm. Colors are scaaaaary! Plus I'm still VERY confused if my coloring style matches my line art. It's like trying to find a good wife for a really stubborn man that's picky but not specific at all and he's happen to be your son. I don't want it to be too realistic yet not cel-shading. I want it to be gritty and paint-like yet pop-art stylish so ugh. UUUUUGGGHHH *rips hair out*

Again, thank you so much. I dunno how my art career would be like without your inputs. I'll keep good contrasts in mind

Nakarie In reply to EvilApple513 [2009-06-01 06:21:55 +0000 UTC]

NO WONDER HE DIDN'T LOOK LIKE RUSSIA. 888D;
I was just confused there, because like I said,
I don't keep up with APH so I'm not too sure. xDD;;
God, I should've thought about the "Character, Story & Artwork is © Sires R. Black" a tad more.

Anyhow,

HEE
HEE

YOU'RE

VERY

WELCOME!

I actually do that quite often, well, when I think what I'm trying to tell you is better if I just SHOW you. Besides, we're all artists, and we learn visually when it comes to stuff like this~

I don't know how you generally go about coloring things, but I'm assuming that you color piece by piece? Like do all the characters then move onto the background? Anyhow, you can try to look at everything as a whole next time and just slowly build up, that way things might piece together better and stuff.

Hhahaha, yeah colors, I haven't colored anything in so long so I don't feel too confident in it right now. ;_____; But yeah, keep trying new things! One thing I can suggest is, before coloring, just put a solid color background that acts as the base. Actually, here's a tutorial I found that might illustrate this better: [link]

But with all that said, there's no better way to go about finding that coloring style you're after then experimenting and practicing. xDD (HAHAHA, LOVE your metaphor btw~ Hilarious) Although I think what you do have so far looks good togather~

"I dunno how my art career would be like without your inputs."

MMAAANNNNNN, YOU GIVE ME WAAYYY TOO MUCH CREDIT!
But I'm honestly, and deeply flattered by that. ;3;
Although I can say the same for you, your inputs/crits are really some of the best I've gotten before~

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EvilApple513 In reply to Nakarie [2009-06-02 20:47:22 +0000 UTC]

D'aw I don't give you enough credit! Your inputs do help me focus on areas of my work that I neglect more than I should (way to go self!) and glad I can give you some worthy inputs... I wish I could give you them more often

Thanks for the tutorial! I know some people color like this and it amazes me to no end. I really should just start using layers again for a change. Actually i want to find the perfect brush settings for painter too. There's so much bloody options on that software it gets confusing. But I think the shading would be better if I used layers because I don't have to be paranoid about messing up areas I like and I'm guessing that's the huge issue I might be having. You never know; might as well try!!

I usually have a transparent line art, and a coloring layer (and the only one I use majority of the time) I work on the background first then color the characters on top of them on the same layer. Maybe I work better if I do work in piece by piece... hmm

Also I don't know WHY you would even remotely loose confidence on your coloring! You have such a natural ability to pick the right color schemes there's no worries for that!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nakarie In reply to EvilApple513 [2009-06-03 07:22:42 +0000 UTC]

FFFFFFFFFF No waiii! XD But I'm glad to hear that I helped. :d Don't worry about gicing me inputs too often or not, I know you're always insanely busy, but that's part of why your comments are so special~ :3

I haven't had a chance to start coloring like this, but I think it would really help me pull my images togather and various other things. Anyhow, there's a lot of thing that I've just been diying to try out for the past year. xDD;

Ack, right, you use painter! I keep forgeting about that. *facepalm* I'm really photoshop trained by adobe, but I wished I can use painter, that way I can use the best of both.

Hahaha, I always abuse layers, normally I work piece by piece, starting with the background. And I'd use 4-5 layers on that, but in the end I would merge it all to just the background layer. For both organizational and RAM saving reasons. o3o

I think what we should do somtimes, to improve is to sit back and analyze our body of work as well as our workflow. Sometimes, there's things you can pick out and things you notice you need to improve on. :d
Like, I really need to work on content/variety when it comes to poses, and actions, people actually doing stuff, like eating or whatever. o___o

Heh, it's because I haven't colored anything seriously in a long time, (and I'm not really counting my school pieces) and I can see that I need to improve on atmospheric colors. :0
