Description An analysis of the 1985 film Return to Oz, the spiritual sequel directed by Walter Murch, which terrorised tons of children but has since developed a cult following. This essay studies the symbolism and allegory behind Dorothy Gale's journey through the twisted Land of Oz, essentially a journey through her corrupted subconscious and decisions she makes to regain control of her mind. This was written mostly for fun and to share my own theories on the subtext of the film.

If you have your own theories or ideas on the film then leave a comment if you like. Enjoy!

Nice analysis. Have you read the books the film is based on? (Mostly The Land of Oz, Ozma of Oz and partially the Emerald City of Oz)
The movie seems to leave it ambiguous if it was a dream or not, but the books have it all actually happen to Dorothy and Ozma. The symbolism isn't as deep as you pointed out here, but they are still fun reads.

It's really a shame Return didn't do better, as it is a great movie.

Thanks for the comments. I've read Land of Oz and Road to Oz, but I am aware of who and what is in those books too.
