Description

"Chlora Myron has published over sixty papers and collaborated in hundreds of projects. She has led numerous expeditions and her work is cited in countless papers around the world. Some of her more prominent publications include The Scale of Danger: Interpreting Manticore Signaling, Eye for Disguise: A Look into Cyclops Camouflage and Everywhere Be Dragons: The Chaos of Dragon Classification. She is the recipient of the Evergreen Scholar Award and has won Best Publication in Natural History for three years. Her most recent work is Hog Heaven, Our Hell: The Impact of Invasive Boracund Populations. When not out on research trips or expeditions, Chlora Myron lives in Grand Fola with her daughter Vera."

This is a fine start for an "About the Author" section in the back of the book, but does it really tell the whole story? Will readers really understand who Chlora is? Absolutely not, but we all must be professional. Yes, indeed, she has done all this and written all that, but hearing that alone would cause one to imagine her as a wise and serious professional. A noble scholar that sits before a desk of books and slowly combs through every word and page. At the very least, one would think she could even write legibly. That is not who Chlora is. She is a tornado of excited rambling, muddy gear and scribbled pages that blows into my office and buries me beneath piles of barely readable scraps. She is a force of nature that barrels across the land in pursuit of her latest obsession, disregarding cost, personal safety and most laws. Chlora, at times, is practically a random event, vanishing for months on end then suddenly showing up at your work or home with a spilling notebook and a hundred things to rant about. The moment you meet her you are already falling behind, as she is three steps ahead and four paragraphs in to whatever monster babble she is thinking about. Even with that, it fails to describe who she is and what it's like meeting her. I could describe even more in detail about what it is like working with her, but we must remain professional and polite.

To truly understand her, you have to meet her, and good luck with that. She is always on the move, always on the hunt for whatever has caught her eye. By the time it takes to make some morning tea, she is already on a boat to another continent or some bizarre land that I can't even imagine. So your best luck of meeting her is running into her somewhere in the wild. At first you might think that's impossible, as how would you even know where she is at? Well, if you are in the same kingdom as her, you will know it. Sooner or later, everyone realizes Chlora Myron is in their midst, and some are happier about it than others. Townsfolk talk about her for months after she has strolled through, talking about the eccentric dryad that follows monsters and dives into dangerous territories. In any meeting of dragon slayers and monster hunters, you are bound to find a person there who has experienced the fury of a dryad whose research specimen just got butchered. Kings and royals tend to know her as well, but usually not in a good light. If there is one thing I know about Chlora, is that she can't keep her mouth shut when she has something to say. She can be good at formalities or following etiquette when it is needed, but one wrong move or ignorant word in her vicinity and that all goes out the door. She has made countless friends and acquaintances during her many journeys, but she has also made a whole lot of enemies. Just so you know, she has a death sentence in about five kingdoms, has been the target of at least three man hunts, been in like eight different prisons and has survived an assassination attempt. I am pretty sure she also has been sighted during a revolution or two, but no real clue if she was involved or just happened to be there. So if you ever have any beef with her, take a look at all that I have shown you and think: if they can't stop her, do you think you even have a chance? And don't think about coming to Grand Fola to try and raise a stink here. She might not be around, but an editor of hers will be, and Chlora can vouch for how sharp these quills can be.

If you happen to run into a Chlora in the wild, here is some advice. The easiest way to win her over is ask about what she is doing and show some interest. Be a good listener or at least pretend to, because she is going to be talking for a good long while. If you have any knowledge in the subject, feel free to share, if you can ever get a word in. If you don't know about the subject and have somewhere to be in the next day, don't mention it. If you think whatever she is researching is gross or ugly, absolutely don't mention it. Don't be worried about her frantic scribbling in her notebook, she always does that. And don't be worried about shaking her hand, it isn't poison, her fingers are just stained from all the ink. Pretty sure those are permanent, and even when she lost a finger it didn't take long for her to blacken it again. If you want an unforgettable day, invite her to your home or town for dinner or something. The stories she can tell are endless and she certainly knows how to get a party going. She loves learning about local culture and taking part of it in any way she can. Even if it is just a regional dish or a simple get together, she will be thrilled to try it. No matter how small your gesture or offer is, she will absolutely love it. You can be sure she will write about it, and you can be sure that I will have to read through the twenty pages of it.

Obviously none of this is going into the book, but I just felt like writing it. Perhaps as sort of a response to that one note she wrote of me and thought I wouldn't see. It's mainly something to pass the time as I am thinking about how best to describe her for the official section. Kind of hard to do, especially since there is way more to her than simple papers and entries. Can't describe the energy she brings whenever she walks into a room. That look she has when she has some species she wants to gush about. The crazed scribbling that makes me surprised she hasn't sliced right through her notebook with that quill yet. But even with all that excitement, there is a wonderful peace to be found with her. Like those times we have tea out at the gardens, or when we go on little adventures with Vera. Even those few research trips she has dragged me along on have their charm, once you get past the part where you stare at some animal for hours on end or when you have to take her notebook away so that you can turn off the lantern and get some sleep. It certainly is an experience. So no matter how much guff I give her about her obscenely long entries or terrible handwriting, I still can't help but smile when that terror shows up at my door.

Also we are not using this picture of you. What are even doing in this? You're supposed to look professional in these, not philosophical. This looks so staged, and you totally don't act like this in real life! I mean, the skull, the books, the pose and that pondering look. Does not fit you at all, I am not presenting you like this to the audience. Especially since you didn't even clean up for it! Your headcap! Your foliage! Why didn't you at least pull out those sticks! You let someone draw you looking like that!? You still have moss growing on you! How many times have I told you to scrape that off before something official!? And if you are going for a contemplative look, why are you still wearing your vest!? Put something decent on! You're hopeless! Next time you get a picture done of you, I am coming along so that you don't look like some overgrown thicket!

For something so simple, it kind of feels monumental to me. After about seven years and hundreds of entries, I finally made a drawing of her. Kind of crazy to think that she actually wasn't meant to be a character originally, just an excuse to write my entries in a different more personal way. Now after all this time, she is like the most notable of all my characters, and she didn't even have a face for all of it! I don't even know what to say at this point. Kind of getting choked up about it! Just some crazy monster-obsessed dryad, and she has gotten me through some rough times. Hopefully now that I have her design down, I can have her show up more.
