Description

Travelers of the desert should be warned when walking the dunes, as a menace swims beneath the sands. It feeds upon flesh, but it is not its teeth that need to be feared. Feeling for vibrations that come from those who walk upon the surface, the beast will locate its prey and scope it out. It monitors its size, shape and stride, looking for the best moment to strike. When it knows how to best topple its victim, it will charge. Swimming through the deep sand at incredible speed, it will burst from the dunes and launch itself straight at its prey's weak point. The bizarrely shaped head will fold itself into a blunt weapon and, with all its strength and speed, slam into its victim. The beast strikes with incredible force, able to knock the wind out of victims and crack bone. Some say that the larger adults can knock the head clean off a cow, and that is why the desert is littered with such skulls. These attacks stun or cripple prey, allowing the creature to swim up and finish it off. For smaller prey, it tends to pulverize them, while larger fallen foes will have their throats seized and crushed. Then it may eat before retreating back into the deep sand.

Humans who enter the desert should be wary, as they too can be struck down. Locals recommend shuffling one's feet while walking, as it muddles the vibrations that are released and makes it hard for the creature to get a clear read. Others suggest dragging a large object behind you, as it will serve as bait that the creature will target first. Be mindful of moving sands when climbing dunes, and do not go down on all fours to scurry up them. Bending over like that exposes one's head as an easy target, and the gut as well. On flat ground, walking upright offers the most protection, as attacks from directly below will have no viable targets. Having the head high up means more distance for the creature to travel from ground to target, slowing its deadly speed. However, there is still a warning for traveling these flatter desert plains. Do not take long strides when walking, short steps are best, this is advice given by many of the local males.
