Outside the hut a figure approaches quieter than the night's wind and just as swiftly. Footsteps so fast, so light, they don't even leave a print.

In his sleepless bed the king hears a soft creak. A settling house perhaps. He rolls on his side, but something dances briefly in his peripheral vision. He freezes. A second look reveals an empty doorway. He let's out a whimpering sigh of exhaustion then returns his head to his pillow. A dark shadow is suddenly projected over his body; ice cold steel tickles the back of his neck. A freezing chill steals his breath and he cannot scream. Before the kings brain receives the nervous impulse to react, three feet of steaming red steal slide through a new opening in his neck.
