One of my pieces for Hamish Steele's 50 Years of Whovians , a collaborative project in honor of the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who this November!

The story I was assigned was The Highlanders, a black-and-white 4-part story from the Second Doctor's era in the 60s. Although the serial has been completely destroyed except for audio tracks and a few production photos, it's a story that's close to my heart for a couple of reasons. For one, it introduces one of my very favorite companions, Jamie McCrimmon (the piper in the picture), and for two, it is the last of the "pure historicals," set directly after the battle of Culloden , the tragic finale in the mid-18th century Jacobite uprisings.

I was lucky enough to have planned a trip to the Highlands before this piece was due, and although I didn't make it to Culloden itself, the background is based on one of the photos I took on the train to Inverness.

Done in sepia technical pen and watercolor.
