I'm not sure if you're familiar with fractals, the picture is actually generated with a computer program and the designs are virtually limitless, if you're interested in making them yourself you can download a free program called Apophysis, there are many tutorials available on deviantart such as this

yeah I got the name because the centre loops kinda look like the 'traditional' diagram of an atom, and I guess since transmutation is the change of one atom to another the name isnt too much of a stretch
