Hello. I'm currently working on a proposed trope on Tv Tropes that covers more or less the same thing you touch on here -- that wasps tend to have strongly negative portrayals in fiction, and that this is especially so when they're paired with bees. If a given work features both bees and wasps, it almost always works out that the bees are the good guys and the wasps are the bad guys. Even absent bees, wasps tend to be portrayed as dicks anyway.

In kindergarten, when I first got my new slide, first thing that happened was some wasps decided to nest in the hinge right above the thing. One of the little bastards got me three times on my eye, causing it to be ugly and swelled shut for the next couple weeks.

Not true. Some years ago my father fed wasps with honey and sugar for several months, and not once any of them attacked me even when I took for refilling with my bare hand the little bowl from them or when I chased them out of the house. It seems that they are smart enough to attack only when they feel menaced.
But, of course, there are several species of wasps and not all of them react similarly...
