Of all the creatures possessed by the Demon's psychic fragments, only Jervil was able to leave the Fair Harvest Inn as constrained by the Bookbinding. And leave he did, climbing up into the upper world of Dernhem as when he had been taught to write by the Scribe, Theonius. But this time Jervil wandered the city entire viewing how the humans scrambled desperately for their short, tenuous existence. When viewed in their masses, people were much like the worms and jackrats possessed by his other fragments, conscious only of the effort required to see to their next meal, and hardly able to maintain a care or concept of the greater world around them. Protected from detection by runes and his own rat-like senses, Jervil watched the near mindless toil of the mob of humanity in Dernhem. Tirelessly he scrambled up walls and over rooftops, squeezed down through sewers and crypts, and stole furtively through the streets and homes in growing belief that no solution could be found therein.
Until the day his searching took him to a gathering of citizens down Dernhem's main thoroughfares to observe the arrival of a young noblewoman from lands further south. Here at last was something that elevated the attention of the mobs to what lay outside of their immediate toils, for the young woman, Drea Aliandis, was to take an oath of service and pledge herself to the role of Dernhem's new Magistrate. As Jervil watched the woman passing through the city with her entourage of guards, ministers, and attendants, something new occurred to him.

So, we'll spill a little more, and a little more, and a little more, and a little more...
This one took me longer than the others, as did the next page. Drea was drawn using the references provided by an anonymous stock model (even for that small image of her), for which I'm very grateful.
Enjoy!
Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

If Jervil is Ratman, does that make his trusty gremlin sidekick Groblin? If so, can we look forward a cheesy look-at-me- pulling-the-rope-with-the-camera-turned -sideways-so-it-looks-like-I'm-climbing-the-building bloopers, perhaps?

Of COURSE! It was all that Magic the Gathering Ninjutsu powers! Damn Ninjutsu was annoying!

...And then he drops down from the wall only to accidentally get his foot caught in a mousetrap one of the building owners left out... but the subsequent curses of dismay go lost and unheard in the throng of the cheering populace as the young noblewoman rides through...
Hmm...it seems he'd had ideas about "recruiting" Drea even earlier on than expected...
Love this image, and I do believe this may be the first time a horse has appeared in this mostly pedestrian story...

Every artist has their weakness in drawing. I have several, but prominent among them has always been horses. I have to really work to get those angular bundles of bone and muscle to look right. Hands? Hands I can draw. But horses keep me up at night...
Thank you! And, you're right about all of it. This story might have turned out very differently had the city government actually invested in that rat-trap vendor who passed through town a few years back.

Yeah, horse legs are tricky with that whole "walking on one toe" thing. The only reason I even *consider* trying to do it is all the riding lessons as a kid paid off as reference (when you spend three + years having to brush down the mentioned angular bundles of bone and tissue, you remember them
)
It would have been different, Jervil would have been limping through the whole story, which isn't quite as menacing when you're about 4.5 feet tall at *most*...
And you're welcome.

I can't say for certain obviously, but I think his plans with Drea involve recruiting the Harbinger more than Drea herself.

And the more Jervil thought of this young Dernhem-queen
The more Jervil thought "I must stop this whole thing!"
"Why for so many years I've put up with it now!
I must stop this Drea from coming! But HOW?"
And then, the rat got an idea. An awful idea!
The rat got a WONDERFUL, AWFUL IDEA!
"I know just what to do," the rat laughed in his throat
And he grew a quick Anjerome beard and a cloak!

So Jervil was a ninja-sorcerer ratman. So that's why he's so hard to kill.
XD
