Description

Here's the tenth of the images from 2020 to be posted. It's on the "What I Did During the Pandemic of 2020" image thumbnailed below.

For one of Herakles' Labors (the Twelfth, or the Tenth--I'll go check and edit this later), he had to go get some of the apparently awesome cattle of this three-headed or three-bodied giant guy who lived on a secret island out west beyond what later became known as the "Pillars of Herakles." The giant's name was Geryon, which we pronounced "jer-EYE-ahn," and Herakles supposedly killed him with a single poisoned arrow (Lernean Hydra poison, if I recall). I switched things up a bit for the storyline in our game and had the poisoned arrow only kill one of the heads, so that rather than making the final journey into the underworld, Geryon was essentially spit back up since he was only slightly dead, coming to on his island to find his servant and two-headed watchdog slain, some of his prized cattle gone, and having learned that it was Zeus' son who did it all. So, while Geryon was "lucky" to be alive, he was really pissed off. For fun, I gave his center head some creepy, undead powers that threw the players for a loop when they had to repeat Herakles' labor in a new context.

Regarding the image itself, this was the first that I completed digitally, and I wasn't quite sure at this point of the overall look of the illustrations I would produce nor of how many characters I would illustrate. I originally crafted the image to include a couple of heroes fighting Geryon in the lower left and a third in the lower right, which would have given him scale, but I removed them when I started the digital work. I still might add them in, as the terrain looks good as background, but not as clearly viewed as it is.

For more explanation about this and my other art, check out the original image here:

Also, mostly to feel like I'm really getting back into the swing of things, I'm including a modified version of my normal disclaimer below.

Note: This is a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.
