Description
"On A Leash" series, Painting #3.The third in this series, and the most complex of the first six. This one is relatively unusual not because it's a coyote-headed guy lassoing two slave-women on some foresaken stretch of Wyoming scrub (I see nothing odd in that
That's just a guess, though, and I'm very open and curious to hear what others might think about it. Are they broken, or will they ever be?
For that matter, I'm really open to new ideas for this series. Heck, I'm asking for new ideas! To submit one, write me a note (prefered) or a comment with the following: (1) an intriguing animal whose head could be tacked onto a man's body; (2) an environment (jungle, river, sand dunes, cliff, etc.); (3) and a time-period or culture the beast man is a part of (Classical Roman, modern urban businessman, Arab sheik, etc). One of the paintings I'm working on now was suggested that way (I'll divulge which when I put it up). Submit an idea and it might create an image in my head (almost like inserting coins in a vending machine, isn't it
The title for this one was suggested to me by a friend in England. And it actually set the pattern for naming all of them. I sent her a free print of it for her input, but I haven't heard from her for some time.
Another friend from England suggested that the central, more defiant girl in this picture looks quite Australian. Since I was uncertain of her nationality (I actually do try to figure that out while I'm painting them, especially if I'm using no reference material), I have officially designated her an "Aussie." (Thanks, Dash.)

OK....I just found your series, nice work by the way and I'm enjoying it lots. This one however seems to me to speak of a darker theme. He is a wolf, a hunter. The look on the girl's faces does show defiance, they were stolen from there Master after all (your piece is called "In Rustler's Ropes" after all.
That is were the darkness comes in. Wolves are meat eaters. The girls are stolen property. Cattle has only one use in the end. Not that I'm suggesting you go there...but this does seem a bit darker to me than the other pieces.

An interesting view/idea on this one, although I don't think the women are meant to be consumed in any of them. The coyote-guy does appear to be toying with them in a kind of pre-meal fashion like a cat toys with a mouse. Macabre, indeed. Thanks!

Thank you! This series was my absolute favorite art project to work on, but the oil painting process took too much time, so I've gone digital.

I can't begin to describe how much I love the posture and expressions of all three subjects here. All I can say that an amazing concept coupled with some amazing talent makes a ridiculously amazing piece of art.
If I could put in a request, it would be a jackal or falcon headed person in an ancient egyptian setting (on a barge on the nile, perhaps). I'm also very interested to see this concept with a female as dominant and a male as submissive.

Now there's an encouraging compliment! And it includes a suggestion for another painting in the series! Gotta' love that!
Thanks a ton! As far as your suggestion and request go, I do have an Egyptian-themed addition in mind, actually (with a cobra headed pharoah), and I have a dominant female with a beast head in a French Poodle version, although I think the submissives will still be female. It's not that I have anything against putting the males in the submissive role to the dominant females, it's just that I really, really like to draw and paint the female figure in expressive ways, so such images coming to my head generally follow the pattern I've got in this one.
And, I don't know if you've seen the others in the series, but I have about six of these in the works, currently--check out the On A Leash gallery [link] for the six finished and three WIPs, and my earlier scraps [link] for the others.
And thanks again!

I see. Well, it looks like all I have to do is wait D: I hope you know what an effort that is for me ^^ I've seen the rest of this collection, and enjoy this one the most, I think it's because of the blatant defiance in both the girls' postures/expressions. I look forward to many more.

I like the defiance, too, and I plan to include such a reaction (even to a more hostile degree) in some of the future ones. Not ALL of these captive women are going to accept their reduced station, and so the images will have to include the range of realistic reactions to it. Thanks again, and thanks for waiting.

i like your artwork... what about egyptian priests with female servants?? i see them inside a ceremonial room holding up incense. one or two priests maybe?? one with the head of an alligator (?) and the other with the head of a panther. the ceremonial tables are the two african servants.. just a thought since you were looking for suggestions

I did have a panther-headed Egyptian one in the works, but I hadn't thought of priests, nor of a crocodile. Thanks a ton! I'm glad you like it. I hope to return to this series someday, and bring the total up to about 16 - 20 paintings.

How about a wildebeest head, in a VIctorian parlor? One of the women could be on all fours for his teacup and saucer. How did they get there? Applied for a position in service of course, not realising what that meant to this master.

Thank you for the suggestion! It's a good one. I haven't had any comments on this series for a long time, so it took me a second to realize what you were saying. I'm going to make a note of your suggestion and tack it up to my idea board so that I can potentially come back to it if and when I pull the oil paints out again. I've got about seven of that series still sitting, partially finished, in my cabinet, and I'm hoping and praying that the passion and opportunity to continue with them will return.

Yeah, but you shouldn't use a word in front of your son and then slap him when he asks what it means. It's double standards. I try to explain to mine that they're naughty words I should never have used and that I'll be diasappointed if I hear them using them
