Okay, I'm going back now to continue Maladyne's story arc in Web of Betrayal.

Maladyne stares into the cold, familiar surface, her preparations to engage with its mystical powers stalled in the features of the face that looks back. The face is indeed hers, just as she recalls, but in the light of her new awareness, she sees it as if for the first time. And, even without the power of ideal added into the whole, what she sees is more than Maladyne of House Martilis.

“You must have suspected the truth, Beloved,” she says, her voice dropping to a whisper. “You who knew and cherished me above all things, you could not have been so blind as to miss the truth in my features. Did not the work that claimed your life speak of it? ‘In form,’ you wrote, ‘she will embody much of that which we lost after Advent Day, when the Harbinger’s work was complete.’ That embodiment is here. I see it in the eyes, and the mouth,” she breathes, “the shape of the face, even--this face that you have fashioned in detail so accurately.”

“‘Karea is not lost to us,’ you said to me only moments ago, but it wasn’t only Karea we lost to the Harbinger, was it? Two entire peoples vanished from our world, and we called their disappearance a miracle, ‘our salvation.’ But the truth, and one of the secrets of my line, is that the Allmother’s most devoted servants continued to occupy our lands, fading over time only as we hid them and forgot them.”

She sighs. “I have gazed upon my own visage countless times in this very mirror, and in the statuary that was commissioned of me in the gardens of my home, but I never saw the truth of it until now.”
