Okay, I'm going back now to continue Maladyne's story arc in Web of Betrayal.

The previous page is this one:

The next page is here:

***********************************************

“Such pedestalizing is perhaps the simplest of poisons,” Maladyne continues, “for by it we raise the idea of what we should be above the truth of what we are, and our measure thus raises one life above another. The secret knowledge of House Martilis is obscure in matters of the peoples who opposed the Harbinger, but when one listens to the silence between spoken words, the pedestalizing is made apparent, as is the poison of it.

“As Avora Villios once said in court, ‘when one holds only to the road that is fenced and hedged, one misses the truth of earth.’ She was right, Anjer. Of the ageless Dustmaidens who survived the original Advent Day, our tales only speak of those who wouldn’t commit their lives to the Lady of Light and Blade. Six in number, they were forced to expend their life-giving magics to the benefit of our land and people before being chained and sent south as a gift to Port Sessen, to sing their endless siren song and tame the waves of the Weeping Sea. The story was told amongst us to praise the justice and might of the Lady of Light and Blade, and once that purpose was accomplished, the story was abandoned."

“But there was a dark part of that story, just as the dark mural painted in the other chamber, unseen by all who told it. To access that dark, one need only ask about those Dustmaidens who survived by betraying the Allmother and devoting themselves to the Harbinger.”

***********************************************

This page continues Maladyne's second-to-last scene in the chapter. For those interested, this detail of the story (that Maladyne's family line was made up of Dustmaidens who forsake the Allmother and committed themselves to the Harbinger) was first put together back when minokura volunteered to stock model for Maladyne, but I avoided working with it because I was still trying to preserve the option to include the Sigris character (character sketch linked below). Slowly, as circumstances have warranted and stock models have come and gone, I have reduced and adjusted the role of the Sigris character until a year ago I abandoned her altogether for the Demon's Due storyline and decided to just pursue this option.

So, at this point, I guess we can say, "Bye bye, Sigris."

As always, Maladyne was drawn using the wonderful reference material provided by minokura . Thanks!

I hope people are weathering the current situation well, and that those who are suffering can get the help they need. Again, I'd like to encourage everyone to be a bit more understanding and tolerant than ever, and I mean myself as well, in viewpoints and communications.

Enjoy!

Note: Web of Betrayal and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

So based on the statue in the background, are we saying the six Dustmaidens were sent south on a big Macy's float, singing all the way? Let's have Al Roker and Savannah Guthrie offer commentary on that one!

I'm thinking this all ties in with the conga-line of naked damsels in chains we saw earlier and has something to do with the "The Iron Wagon," but you're right: they'll need commentators to cover the parade.  Personally, I would have gone with Kathy Griffin and what's-his-name, but Al and Savannah will do just fine.

Tell you what, I would like nothing better than to check in on the original four captive heroines while we're in the neighborhood!

Suddenly, the Magic Mirror &/or Mood-Setting Novelty Lamp started showing the infamous "Slave Auction" scene from Busby Berkeley's Roman Scandals (1933)... for no apparent reason.
         www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyicq0…

Maladyne was confused (or maybe more confused) as she stared at the bizarre, black & white images flickering across the smooth glass.  She turned to Anjerome.

Mallie: "Anjer?"
Anjer: "Mallie?"
Mallie: "Is that a horse singing on the soundtrack?"
Anjer [nodding]: "Sounds like Bruce.  I guess he did get that recording contract.  Good for him."
Mallie [starring at the mirror again]: "I suppose Luther will need a new noble steed."
Anjer: "I certainly wouldn't haul Luther's fat ass around on my back if I had a recording contract."
Mallie: "Me neither."

And... Scene!

I've never seen that one. For that matter, I say that phrase so much in these comments that I am going to have to start using an acronym for it: Insto, as in "I've-never-seen-that-one."

Unfortunately, Insto also sounds somewhat like an American pasta-meal-out-of-a-can that cooks in less than 30 seconds.

70s-style Kid: "Mom, can I have some more Insto with my Spaghettios?"

70s-style Mom: "Yes, but try some garum with it, Son; you need more protein."

Bruce's jingle is what really sells the whole thing. It sounds deceptively like Ogden Edsel's Kinko the Clown...

"Insto, Insto, get it by the pound!

Your kids'll be all smiles and they'll never wear a frown!

Insto, Inst' buy it anywhere in town!

Goats will never eat it 'cause they just can't keep it down!

Insto, Insto, Insto, Insto..."

(Lyrics by the Hellbinder, who is quoted as having said: "Luther who?!")

Um, slavery is already kind of dark, lady.

Definitely, but as a form of incarceration for a violent, aggressive enemy (or someone perceived to be such), it's apparently less distasteful for some.

I'm reminded of how in Conan Exiles you get a Steam achievement for putting a thrall in the Wheel of Pain for the first time. It's called "What do I know of the cultured ways?" appropriately enough

I drew that statue image back when Tangled Threads, Part 3 was getting finished up in early November. But, you're right, I just can't help it.
