yes, and sorry i thought it was his hat, my bad. But now that i think about hearth's warming eve play, Starswirl the bearded was never revealed to be alive during the founding of Equestria and we know that discord came after Equestria was founded but before the Alicorn sisters. Unless it was a elongated resurrection spell via dark magic gone horribly wrong, it couldn't be him.
My guess Discord's origins are related to the the legend of the love poison in hearts and hooves day because SB clearly stated "Chaos Reigning" and there was mention of a dragon. Maybe in an attempt to stop the dragon, unicorns who were ruling instead of the poisoned lovers wanted to created a creature powerful enough to stop a full grown dragon and put a lot of magic, good and bad, into it and thus formed Discord or at least the first draconquus.

i don' t remember the quote "chaos reigning" being said by starswirl…
i think it was celestia the one who said it when explaining the status of her kingdom before they used the elements on discord (also the dragon could have been discord since it's form is similar to the traditional japanese style dragon, and having the word "draco" could also indicate a draconequus)
the quotes "Chaos reigning" also comes from the same book of the love poison, which was made, given and drank by the prince and the princess of an ancient kingdom, so for that they couldn't help in the fight against chaos.

I said Sweetie belle, when she was reading how the prince who created the love poison for the princess went horrible wrong when they couldn't perform their royal duties. In hearts and hooves day. For all we know, that kingdom was the original Equestria since a. no name given and b. so far Equestrian is the only place shown where ponies live(not including zebras), let alone have pony royal families where the story could take place.
