Description This, at least I hope, was something that was requested of me on Tumblr. I thought I'd upload it here as well.

Most of my artist buddies already know similar techniques, but hey, why not share?!

I do agree with The-Rmickey, I never really was taught anything either and always worked on the feeling of how it should be but if you want to improve that's not enough
and the method you described Ashleigh does help...I do step 1,2 and 3 every time but only focused on the individual boxes for the outline, not the shading...and I should.
I also never looked at color mapping of the portraits or rotating for that matter... so thank you for teaching me ^^

Well this is an interesting way to look at things ^^
When I drew a traditional ballerina I worked in grid and upside down. It was intense but interesting ^^

Well someone on tumblr said they have a hard time 'seeing' highlights and shadows and how to shade...so I was trying to brainstorm how to force yourself to look at things without just seeing the person you're drawing. Hopefully this works for them.

Hopefully this does ^^
I got asked this too and honestly I don't know how I shade things... Just the mental look of; "okay my light is coming from here and if it hits the nose bridge it will curve over casting a shadow and a highlight on the cheek"... I can't explain how I know that keke

You made it sound so simple!!

I'm the same way .. when I paint and people ask I usually just say "well, I paint it that way because that's how it's supposed to look." but...that doesn't really help someone who is a beginner.
I'm glad I made it sound easy... I mean... I've been doing art for so long that besides fine tuning my skills lately.. everything is just a way of looking and observing how things are...

Now it's up to them to take my small advice and apply it and practice enough until it works.

EXACTLY! ... I just naturally know how to do it I guess... Never really was taught anything either ~ But it truly does come down to how you observe things. And that is how art comes out differently amongst people ^u^

That is so true, for some it works and for others it doesn't do much because they get overwhelmed or frustrated ;;A;;

I get frustrated, but I also am very determined... .since beginning these portraits, I've only ever scrapped 1 drawing and I ended up re-drawing it a month later.

Same here!
But sometimes I draw and draw, then the composition isn't right and I can't fix it so pfft~    haha

My instructors often scolded me because I'm one of those people that have to see everything through. I've also been told that I'm an odd artist because I don't keep a sketchbook.

Everything I set down and draw has to come to some sort of completion... I suppose I take perfectionist to a new level. Now, I do doodle on sides of papers and such ... but that's the only 'random' drawing that I do.

hahaha wah! That is intersting kekeke .. I have quite a few sketchbooks, but they are full of complete art. I can't do unfinished. Except my recent sketchbook. Which is for the times when I can't function in photoshop; so base sketch in my sketchbook XD ... Odd? No I think you're pretty cool!!

YES! If it doesn't come to completion, it is unheard of ! I have to, no matter the hours kekeke XD
Doodles are fun right? Especially at the times they come at kekeke XD

I draw eyes on anything sometimes... when bored though~

At my last job, I drove my coworkers crazy because I drew on everything...sides of forms, our shift book (to pass on information from shift to shift), and post-it notes... but it was during a 7 year period where I had created NOTHING.... and I was literally starving for art... drove me nuts... so when doing a 9 hour shift, I drew. lol.

And I primarily drew vines... like... twisty thorned intricate vines... sometimes it was cartoons... ones that would make my coworkers laugh but it's because my characters made fun of the customers... lmao.

WOAH! Epic hahaha ... That is too long of a break ;0; how'd you survive?

hahhaha humor in art kekekeke XD Nice!!

FallThruStardust In reply to The-Rmickey [2014-09-08 03:19:45 +0000 UTC]

I didn't feel like I was surviving. But I was stuck in a chaotic schedule... I was working 10 hours a day at first and it was around the same time I got pregnant with my first son... I worked graveyards and so I would work 10 hours, come home and sleep for like 10 hours or so and then go back to work... sometimes I slept almost 14 full hours... but only if it was a day off or something... Then that progressed into coming home from work to a newborn... then getting pregnant again, and then having a 1 year old and a newborn... plus then working 8 hours a day... so I just didn't function outside of work/sleep/and babies... so no artwork.

My dad works grave yards ... I don't think it is healthy~ But then again I work during night and sleep during the day =/ ... You worked and work really hard and well may I say!! What did you do? babies are a lot of work, but worth it in the end : )))

My papa works at a prison, as one of the security peoples and my mum is working on finding a job since she was allowed out of the hospital ^u^... I am looking for work too so grr... grumble grumble lol lets see how it goes kke...

OH! Did you get a job yet?

FallThruStardust In reply to The-Rmickey [2014-09-08 04:55:30 +0000 UTC]

Nope, lots of denials... oddly enough, I'm 'overqualified' for everything.... which... is true, but when all I need is a part time like $10 an hour job... they want the people fresh on the job market... not me who has a Bachelor's degree and 10 years hotel experience.. So, I'm trying again, but dumbing down my resume.

awe maaaan~
That is annoying it sounds... I feel you, the jobs I have looked at; involved experience and talking with people. Which is not what I am up too. I would like a job involving drawing~ ;;A;;

Bachelor's and 10 years hotel experience holy cow that is tense!
Dumbing it down? sounds like it would be reasonable like that ...

problem is that employers don't want someone who is too good for the job, it means they would spend their time training someone just to have them leave or move on to something better... but I've got kids and I just need to keep em fed... ya know?

The-Rmickey In reply to FallThruStardust [2014-09-08 07:02:46 +0000 UTC]

YES! it is annoying =/ .... But yes you have a family and you need to keep them healthy and fed!
I wish people would understand that! grr....
