Personality:

Alan’s a genial, quiet kind of guy and always seems to have his head in the clouds or his nose in a book. He avoids any conflict he sees as unnecessary (with one exception), acquiescing to others more often than not. He listens more than he talks and keeps most of his thoughts up in his head, filtering what he says to be as polite as possible. (His poker face still needs work, though.) He can give the impression of being hapless and helpless, like he shouldn’t have been let out of the house because he’s likely to get himself eaten. Thankfully, he’s not quite as hopeless as that, but he is definitely more book-smart than life-smart. He’s idealistic and a little naïve, as well.

He likes to read and draw, and is good with a pen. He’s a voracious learner, and can be excitable and enthusiastic when it comes to academics, biology in particular. His priorities are a little whacky at times—if it’s not something critical to life, limb, or sanity, he’ll drop what he’s doing to draw a particularly nice flower, say, or observe the flight of a butterfree. His thought processes can be strange as well, and when he talks, he can jump from tangent to tangent with little warning. Catch him without his filters, and he might sound a few bats short of a belfry.

He’s actually pretty adventurous for a ‘bookish, nature-loving pansy,’ as his dad would call him—not to say that he wouldn’t be nervous, but he likes the outdoors, likes climbing trees and inching around cliffs with itty-bitty footholds. Alan just likes heights in general—when he wants to sulk or brood, instead of heading for a bar, he heads for the highest place he can find.

Backstory:

Prior to enlisting in the military, Alan Sharp was a university student with a passion for biology and passable skill in cartography. The youngest of six children and the only son, Alan’s father had had certain expectations of him—he wanted a son that was brilliant and, well, manly. He got one-and-a-quarter of two. As a boy, Alan often snuck out to explore both the city and the areas around it—up to and including the Viridian Forest. He didn’t do it to be daring (though he did find it fun); rather, he wanted to observe the animals and plants he might find. He could climb trees and scale walls with the best of scoundrels, but he did it more to get a better view of the flying Pokemon he preferred than to run from pranks or give his mother a heart attack. (Though he did give her several, especially when he came home with injuries.) He enjoyed certain books, and drawing, and devoured any and all knowledge he could get his hands on, but showed little to no interest in the things his father pushed him towards.

Like the war.

Oh, he supported his country and all, and the history was kind of interesting, but he wasn’t captivated by it, not like his father was. A disabled veteran-turned-engineer, his father was certain that the most important thing any child of his could do would be to fight for their country. Alan and his father butted heads over just about everything, but Alan could respect that opinion, even if he himself didn’t subscribe to it. When his (tough, terrifying, terrific) sisters decided to enlist in the army, he wished them well and prayed for them, but didn’t think he’d be joining them—he didn’t particularly want to go, and surely there was something useful he could do at home to support them. His father could grumble all he wanted about ‘real men’ or whatever it was, Alan was staying put.

Unfortunately for him, Alan underestimated his father’s ability to get under his skin.

Week in and week out, his father pestered and grumbled and made loud, pointed comments to thin air, took to reading the news aloud and rubbing his sisters’ letters in his face. His mother did her best to run interference—she fussed over and supported all her children, almost embarrassingly so, given that all of them were grown adults. But his father’s disdain overtook his mother’s support, and Alan finally had enough—he enlisted. He’d lost this fight, but was mad enough that he didn’t care, for once. Join the military, prove his father wrong, help his sisters out, get to work up close with some pokemon, maybe travel a bit. He could do that.

While his first impulse was to join the army, all his sisters were there. And he loves them all, he really does, but they teased him like crazy, and once they got wind of what happened, he would never hear the end of it. So he chickened out (though he wouldn’t call it that) and joined the air force—more distance between him and them. It won’t stop them from keeping tabs on him, any more than enlisting will keep his dad from judging him or writing home make his mom stop fussing and embarrassing him in front of his entire squadron from a distance, but. He lives in hope, he supposes.

Pokemon:

Pokemon bio / personality:

Hailing from the Viridian area, Mistral is hell on wings. She’s resigned to fighting for these stupid humans in their stupid war, but that doesn’t mean she has to make it easy for any of them, especially not this little partner of hers. She delights in pranking and harassing all humans, but focuses her attentions on Alan, literally henpecking the man—she’s not sure what it is about him that makes it particularly fun, but it is. So much fun. (She could swear she’s seen this one before, somewhere. It's probably all in her head.)

Their partnership is a tenuous and finicky thing wherein they sometimes work together and she sometimes fwaps his head with her wings while he tries to resist the urge to Kentucky-fry her. Alan makes an ongoing effort to be friendly and understanding, but impromptu games of ‘catch that goddamn bird’ are still fairly common at this point.

*Although they still don't get along easily, Mistral's found that she draws the line short of wanting him dead. She doesn't disdain him that much.

Gil | Infernape | Bold | Blaze | Male

Pokemon bio / personality:

Taken from the wild and raised amongst humans as a chimchar, Gil is more cooperative than Mistral, but not necessarily more well behaved. He's somewhat of a clown and a jokester, and where Mistral focuses mainly on humans, Gil likes to spread the laughs to humans and pokemon alike. He's easily amused, and when it comes to pranks on Alan, he's as likely to laugh at him as he is to try to defend him. He gets fired up easily and is likely to get ahead of himself, especially in a fight; it can be hard to tell if he's brave, or just stupid. He's very tactile and as a monferno enjoyed being carried, often hanging onto Alan piggy-back style as he went about his business.

Their partnership is smoother in that Gil is willing to listen to Alan--but as mentioned above, Gil tends to get ahead of himself, and can get so caught up in one thing that he ignores anything else Alan might say--and, well, he's still kind of a jokester. He and Mistral get on like peas in a pod most days.

Prudence | Chingling | Jolly | Levitate | Female

Pokemon bio / personality:

A cheerful little chingling, otherwise known as Pru. She's often found practicing her moves and trying to be helpful, which unfortunately backfires more than half the time. (Practicing astonish in the wee ungodly hours of the morning, dropping the glass of water she's practicing telekinesis on, assisting Gil and Mistral in a practical joke disguised as a training exercise, inexplicably misplacing all of Alan's left shoes--he got those back eventually, at least. The list goes on.) She genuinely means well each time and gets very upset when she finds she's caused a problem--bounces back pretty quickly, though.
