I've always found Vortigaunts to be cute in an ugly sort of way. XD I knew I'd eventually end up drawing one. Sometimes I think that Valve was reading my mind when they were making Episode 2 because I really, really wanted more Vortigaunts. =3I don't really have too much to say about him besides that... he fits my laptop screen! Wheee~ 8D

The Vortessence is such a fascinating concept. It almost sounds like some sort of 'word play' on quintessence.

My explanation for them all looking the same and being the same "gender" is the simple fact that they reproduce asexually. It would also make sense why the Vortigaunt in Ep-2 talked about some ancestral practice called "Ant lion-Husbandry".

But Vortigaunts posses nipples and navels. I doubt they would reproduce asexually with such anatomical features. I believe their apparent homogeneity is due to the nature of the Half Life game itself: It contains a limited amount of character models and as such cannot create complexity equal to the world we are used to living in.

That just sounds ridiculous. Who said they don't breast-feed the young they produce asexually?

It's not typical for breast feeding to be done in species who reproduce asexually. However, since it is alternate universe we are discussing here, I suppose it could be possible. But, that still does not explain the navel. If the child is born connected to an umbilical cord, they must gestate while inside of a parent body. If that is so, they must reproduce sexually.

They don't have to gestate inside of a parent's body. The parent more likely produces an egg with the embryo inside that is connected to an umbilical cord that the parent then feeds and tends to. Either that or the males produce live young asexually. I highly doubt that these creatures produce sexually, it makes no sense at all.

If one of the parent partner produces an egg, the species must reproduce sexually in order to fertilize the egg. I doubt that they would be egg laying organisms as they appear to posses no way to lay an egg. How, precisely, would the males produce live offspring asexually? Do they bud just like bacteria? In the end, I guess we'll never know, unless Valve gives us further insight into their species.

Well the asexuality makes a bit more sense due to the fact that there's only ever one model of Vortigaunts, and the fact that they're all linked to a low-grade telepathic field in a hivemind-like capacity.

Vorts are awesome in Episode 2. The one that follows you into the Antlion nests had some great lines to lighten the mood without trying to squeeze out laughter (which the entire game's light bits did well), like when you're climbing out of the pit post-riding-downhill-in-giant-cart.
Something like "No pit is complete without a Freeman climbing out of it."
