Description Oil on panel, this is only a detail, the rest of the in-progress queens are in my scraps right now [link] if you're not looking in scraps you miss some of the most fun and infinitely crit-able shite i make. so anyway, i DO want feedback on the queens, they are in progress, which is actually the time for adjustment. after a work is done i usually listen to crit and shake my head or nod but if it's done i probably never touch it again.

clubs/wands poker/tarot card.

you're pretty. i like how you made the crown sorta flow so well with the hair. If only there was a way to chip off the top corners of the piece to give it the appearance of the rounded corners of a playing card.

i think there's a misunderstanding, i'm in the Spades card, this is my friend, Ana. she is pretty. it would be possible to cut the corners off, but i am not convinced yet that that's what i want to do with it. interesting thought tho. thanks.

Actually, I think that the slight paradox on the issue of visually percieved pictorial space in this piece is very interesting, indeed even the accomplishment of the piece. Cards by nature are flat. The images on the court-cards do not try to suspend disbelief at all. However, your painting has explored a careful balance between the spacial nature of the queen and her background against an unpercieved, objective space in the border. The overlap between the two causes a paradox as the border normally stands out to the viewer as being in front of the subject. However, in your case, it appears behind the queen somewhere and its slightly rough texture also implies the characteristic of an object in percieved space. This is a really careful balance of the objective verses the real, almost like a combination os Suprematist Art with the relatively traditional, Naturalistic style. I like it a lot . I've actually tried myself to work with changing the court-cards, and I completely understand why you've only done half the card...

thanks for the thoughtful comment! actually it's a detail, the full set of queens in the full-view version is in my scraps through the link. originally i was going to play with edges and outline the fully modelled figures in black, both making them 3-d and linear at the same time. as i painred the modelled form, though i lost interest ing hte black line and when i layed it over the top later i decided against it and took it off again. i got more caught up in the characters in the cards here, and making them into personalities, strong women and forces of nature. the queens in the tarot deck that correspond to the poker cards are representative of certain traits in women, certain archetypes, and certain circumstances. they each have symbols worked in (or will when i get that far) to represent their elements, their aspects, their tempers etc...

That's pretty cool... I've always thought that the queens have different traits:
Queen of clubs = Blunt, yet down-to-earth in personality, a subtle character with unimaginable depth... The sort of person you could trust all your secrets with. She is an ocean in depth, her smile/smirk just an indication of her knowledge.
Queen of diamonds = Luxurious... although completely superficial. She is a sexual creature with the pure desire to satisfy her physical self... this is balanced against the QCs nature.
Queen of spades (Black Maria) = Mean and cruel, with a poison-like quality to accompany a bitterly sarcastic smile.
Queen of Hearts = Compassionate and kind... The Black Maria's counter-balance.

interesting take! i combined them with their counterparts from the Tarot deck (diamonds=coins, clubs=wands, spades=swords, hearts=cups) and took from some of the literature on translation of the cards, focusing mostly on thie positive aspects, though now that i think of it, a series of the colder/darker traits would be fun too....

The queen and background look great! However, the card border thing isn't working. It doesn't read as a 3d shape like the woman and background but it doesn't quite read as a flat 2d card either. The shape of the canvas confuses this a bit. It might work as an illustration of some kind but as a stand alone piece of art, it doesn't come across properly. I'd ditch the border.

i agree, i like borders... cuz its as if queens are comming alive out of the cards. i think it is really neat that each of them is moddled after one of your friends
