I once thought that because of my Aspergers, I was cursed, yet everyone else said that I was blessed.
Now I understand that my Aspergers is both a blessing and a curse; it gives me a unique, positive outlook on things yet it impairs my social interaction and my ability to have a meaningful relationship with someone.

As for Ignorance, it is the thing that has plagued millions of minds for so many years. Just be aware of it and steer clear of those who are.

My brother has autism, but because of that I'M the one who gets bullied >_< Yeah yeah don't tell me to ignore it, I've heard it all before... But now a teacher wants to get me tested. It's not fair on the siblings as well as the kid affected!

I dont have autism or aspergers but i do have relatives and friends that do i have also worked with people who have it, and find it irritating when people [especially online] insult, degrade, and generally torment those with the disorder, i hear people say "autism is no excuse", what other excuse is there?, its like saying if someone who has tourettes, they can't use it as an excuse for cursing, or "my friend is autistic but he/she can do that, why dosent he/she?", what a lot of people need to understand is that autism comes in different levels [mild-high functioning], and that people have different quirks, i agree with the stamp wholeheartedly, its just blatant ignorance, i dont want to start a huge debate, just feel i want to get my point across.

i hate how people want to cure Autism it's stupid, the child isn't suffering the parents are just looking for a easy kid raising experience that they can do without classes or seminars.
We need understanding! learn to be in your child's shoes.... wear hearing aides to simulate audio processing disorder and look through binocular lenses for depth perception disorder. if your child does something people find odd do it with them so you both are weirdos.... be one with their world!

As someone with ADHD and Aspbergers syndrome, I'm going to share my views on this subject.

Autism is not something to be 'proud' of, but at the same time, it's not something to be ashamed of, either. I'm very tolerant of people bashing on autistics, because that's THEIR opinion, not mine. And it's not like they're talking specifically about me. Heck, I laugh when people use the terms, 'ass-burgers'. or 'asspie'! Those names just sound funny to me!

What I DON'T like is when everyone jumps on the media bandwagon and starts making a big fuss about things, in particular, the news. A normal person does something, no one cares. But, OH! This person is AUTISTIC! Breaking news, everyone! The autistic got his xbox points taken away! And people just EAT IT UP. I wouldn't care if it were about something important, but god, why does the news have to do stuff like that?

I conclude this by saying that autism is neither wrong nor right. It's just something you learn to cope and live with, and eventually, you don't really think about it. It just becomes part of who you are, you know?

I totally agree with you, I im not necessarily proud to have autism, but it isnt really curse either or something I should be ashamed of. at the Same time im proud of being myself all the same. I guess It just a way of life for us

I think you should be proud of who YOU are, not your labels. As the mother of a severely ADHD child who also has some other fairly large issues, labels suck. BUT, they help get services and other things that he needs. So, I allow the labels.

People like to label people. It's a fact of life. When someone who has any sort of disorder or disease does something, it's outside the norm for most people. But people like you and I, who live with our diagnoses day in and day out, see these things for what they are. We are proud of the things we accomplish IN SPITE of our issues, no matter how big or small. Or at least we should be.

I think any disorder is neither right nor wrong, they just are. It's what we, as persons with these disorders do that counts.

I am proud of who I am. I also have a friend who's autistic, slightly more severely than I am. I look out for him, and he does get quite a few peoples' attention. But once I explain to them what he has, and explain the situation to them, they seem to understand.

My 3 year old son was just 'diagnosied' with Autism. Everyone else broke down and started crying. It pissed me off that they would react that way. Just because some doctor tells us that he isn't normal doesn't call for them to act like he'd said he was going to die from some incurable thing. I didn't cry, I accepted what was going on, and decided I wasn't going to pity my son, I was going to make sure that he grew up to be happy and healthy.

Hilarious enough, that comment was made before I had a closer examination of this mental phenomena. And while I do agree that there are certain times (which is the majority of) that it may not be considered a tragedy. But the more severe cases turn the human to waste. Those who are less severe however, may also suffer, something that should be addressed.

For what it is worth, as an Autistic man, I am labelled 'disabled,' and yet, to my awe, my shock, and my disdain, when I turn on the idiot-box to watch the news, rarely are my 'disabled brethren' the ones on the news killing and raping. Sorry, filters, but that little nugget of irony's been weighing on my soul lately.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FeMailleTurtle In reply to Colour-Me-Deranged [2010-01-25 23:50:01 +0000 UTC]

Interesting point, and one I've never considered. Have you researched percentage of "disabled" persons committing crimes? That would be cool to have data on.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Colour-Me-Deranged In reply to FeMailleTurtle [2010-01-26 13:41:57 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately the percentage is difficult to determine due to the nature of the legal system. If I were to commit a crime right now, a crooked lawyer might well have me plead insanity. Or not, I may well never know, I'm not a crime-commiting kind of guy.

Of course, if I did do that research it would probably end with me being more bitter about certain things than I am currently, all I know is what I see, the world at large is run by neurotypicals, look what they've done with it. Yet still they have the gall to criticise, I wish I had that kind of gall.

Then again, we're also living in an era where everything that can't be condensed into a 25-minute TV guide expose is considered 'abnormal,' such is the nature of Zeitgeist, I suppose.

Lastly, there's my own deficit, my definition of disabled is not as liberal as your average neurotypical definition. To me disabled of a nature physical or emotional enough that it interferes with the personal happiness of the individual or individual's close family/friend network.

I am autistic too. I just want to say is, you're taking this too literal. That's sometimes what we do. But I just want you to look at the big picture: these people have lost their child's personalities, seen their friend's children get it. Do you know how you would feel if your mother suddenly stopped talking and looking at you? That's what they've done.

My local DAN doctor, Dr. Kardish, he helped me back in January 2008. He put me on the GF/CF diet and some (BUT NOT ALL) if my symptoms were gone or weakened. I abandoned the diet and could not go on the full regiment because of how tight our money got, but his spirit still stayed with me. He's not an evil man trying to kill us; he is a sincere man doing his best to help children, and he sure did help this one.

I was like this all my life and I still am; there was an ugly shell concealing from the world and only since June of this year have I shed it. I have only started trying to fit in with this world. I am still socially inept and lonely, and that is the tragedy of it all. I will not vaccinate my future children, and I may grow up to be one of those "DAN doctors" you hate; just to help other people like I was helped myself.

This is horrible mental ilness, and it CAN and WILL be reversed with care, but it takes time to settle in.

People who say Autism isnt a real disease, are truley ignorant. They have no right to say that since they never had lived with someone with autsim. Only us, the people who truly know what autism is, knows the truth.
