Description Fanart of John and Jerome from Ginga Nagareboshi Gin and Ginga Densetsu Weed,
a manga (and anime) made by Yoshihiro Takahashi.

These two were my childhood heroes,
I can't even begin to describe how much these dogs meant to me back then.

They sparked my love for German Shepherds,
these two are the reason why I got Sergent (my lovely dog)
And it's because of him that I'm still here today.

Of course, now that I'm older (and hopefully wiser)
I see there's actually a lot of things I dislike a lot about the Ginga stories.
For example, the blatant sexism.

But, I still wanted to pay homage to these characters.
As they are a part of the reason why I'm still alive today.

When I was little, we had this store where you could rent movies and stuff,
and I remember I always wanted to rent the GNG series, every weekend.
I watched it over and over again lmao :'D

Great Fanart
But what do you mean by blatant sexism?
Of course, they all seem to be a little conservative, but doesnt for example Chross portrays a strong Female, who is allways willed to fight with all of the males?

Thank you!

Of course, Cross will always be one of my faves!

I just find it kind of silly that there's so many male characters,

and (almost) no females. I'm not sure how it is in the manga, since I haven't read all of it?

But in the anime, it's just really bothering me that the only females I can think of are Fuji and Cross?

The whole thing with "being a real man" is just.. arrr I don't like that 😅

And the fact that the female characters are just reduced to being emotional and soft,

and have to be "accepted" by the guys is just, wrong, y'know?

It's full of toxic masculinity too.

But even with that said, I still love the franchise 😊

I see your point, there really should be more strong female characters. However, its still a Shonen, so its made for boys (which is kind of funny because as far as i noticed, the majority of the fanbase seems to be female). But those dogs, being portrayed as extremely manely is a really cool thing in my opinion. Those values and standarts they try to establish the whole time like fighting to the death, fighting to protect their friends, pride and courage are more important than the own life....its just so conservative and cool. They are behaving like the old samurai all the time. And i have no idea where you live, but here in Germany we have that soft, open, multicultural society, the boys in our country nearly look like girls with their style and behaving. So this is the reason i really like this mentioned "toxic masculinity"

I get where you're coming from!

But I don't agree. Even tho it's a shounen, that doesn't mean it has to reduce women to only being "soft",

and only a plot point in the story to further develop male characters. If the "diversity" don't strike you as odd and kind of bland, then I don't know what to tell you.

If you can even call it diversity.

Out of, I don't know how many male characters, I can only think of 2 females, and even with these 2,

Fuji's only role is to be a mother, and the same goes for Cross, the difference being Cross has to outdo herself to be "accepted" by the guys.

As far as I'm concerned there aren't any female characters with diverse roles and personalities, only males.

That bothers me, because growing up with that kind of representation only lead me to believe that there's only one way for a guy to live,

which is by sacrificing everything and not care if you die and potentially hurt the people who're closest to you.

The notion that you only live to sacrifice your life for others is just belittling yourself.

I get that they have to stop something evil, and that lives may be lost in a war, but glorifying death is just, not cool.

It's fine that you love your friends so much that you would do anything to protect them, I think that's one thing I really like about the franchise. Loyalty.

But it's just not good to only represent guys as "live and die to fight" when they could've furthered the plot by making the characters more varied, vulnerable and relatable.

Just because it's "made for boys" doesn't mean it has to paint women in a negative light,

saying women has to do this and that to be seen as equal to a man is just wrong.

Toxic masculinity hurts everyone, it's not a positive thing.

It helps establish the idea that women aren't equal to men, and I just don't fuck with that.

Dont get me wrong, i didnt want to expound the shonen to be a vindication for the behaving or writing of the male characters, it was ment to be refered to the overrepresentation of male characters, when it is a shonen.

I agree with you, the image of the female characters, being reduced to just give birth is really outdated and too conservative. However, later there are some stronger females like Jeromes Wife, who kind of has got a superordinate military rank, i dont know if you know the manga and i dont want to spoiler you

Sacrificing oneself/pride and honor are a huge part of the japanese culture since the age of the samurai until know.
This is an aspect that you either like or dislike, i personally like those references to the japanese warrior culture very much.
And glorifying death belongs to it as well, which can be seen as fearless and courageous, nevertheless its still fictional and its up to everyones own estimation if he rather likes tender, realistic characters or fearless warriors.

I interpreted toxic masculinity in a different way, like behaving really manely, using swearwords or having that typicall badass image. I would never want to establish womens inequality to men, sorry if it came across like that.

Oh I see! I think I misunderstood you there, before.

Like I said I haven't read the manga,

I still think the ratio of male characters to female characters is outrageous.

I understand that too, but I don't agree with it.

It's noble to sacrifice your life to save anothers, I admire that.

But it's just so exaggerated here, like, "I'd kill myself just for you to approve of me for five seconds"

I don't know how to put it, I'm not good with words.

There's a limit you know? They could have done it and made a great impact, like,

get the audience geniunly upset over someone dieng.

Don't get me wrong, when I was 12 and I watched some of my fave characters die,

I was really upset.

But now, I can't get upset about it because it's so... needless. And dare I call it, lazy writing.

And I just don't like that glorifying of death, but that's just me.

I know it's a lot to do with Japans history. But just because it's been like that for a long time,

doesn't make it right.

I liked Weed a lot for his compassion, tho I'm not a big fan of the GDW anime.

Even with it's flaws and kind of bad animation, I still think the characters were more complex than in GNG.

More varied. Some characters I absolutely despised, others I loved, even with their flaws.

That means the creators achieved what they wanted, an effect on their audience, for it to be succesful.

Being "badass" and using swearwords is not toxic masculinity.

You can be masculine without being toxic.

Here's a definition:

"In psychology, toxic masculinity refers to traditional cultural masculine norms that can be harmful to men, women, and society overall;

this concept of toxic masculinity is not intended to demonize men or male attributes,

but rather to emphasize the harmful effects of conformity to certain traditional masculine ideals"

Yeah, i have to admit that many deaths are needless and this attitude towards the death is exaggerated very often, sometimes it is even annoying.
In moderation it is cool in my opinion but not in that exaggerated way.

I totally agree on your opinion towards the gdw anime, the characters there were better written by far. While in gng many were very dull and violent, there was more character diverity and complexity in gdw. Nevertheless, Weed was a little bit too soft, i liked Gin more. But Weeds son Orion is a total brute again, many fans are annoyed by him.

Ok, thanks for the definition^^

Yeah, I just wanted to make sure you knew what I meant,

I'm not too good with words!

But even with GDW, Weed IS too soft.

You can't win a war by always showing compassion.

It just doesn't work like that, even if you'd want it to.

God, I gotta read up on the manga!

Thanks for the replies tho!

It's great to talk about this sort of stuff!

It makes me even more interested in the manga!

Id really recommend you to try out the manga because you would really miss something! For example i would start with the gdw manga after the hogen arc, to read the ongoing story after the death of hogen you know from the anime^^
There are so many interesting topics after that, for example getting to know weeds two brothers (which are so badass), or russain military dogs entering the japanese isle hokkaido, when Jerome meets Lydia.
So try it out, you wont be disappointed!

I absolutely agree!

Even though as I got older I realized how flawed the series is,

it still has a special place in my heart, and it always will!
