Description
Now available for purchase on Etsy: [link]This is the first prototype of a new line of wee pocket-sized blank books I'm working on. I'm calling them "SteamBooks" because they're influenced by Neo-Victorian Retro-Futurism (or something), more commonly known as Steampunk.
This one is, I think, a version I'll call "The Quartermaster's Accountbook." Maybe.

These are really gorgeous I'm a bit curious about the key; have you done anything to keep it from rusting further, or is it enough to just seal it? I love the look of rust, but I've been a bit worried about using my rusty findings in anything as I'm afraid they would deteriorate over time.

I just sealed it with several coats of matte varnish. Though I haven't actually tested it over time, it should prevent further rust since it prevents oxygen from contacting the metal. The only downside is that even though the varnish is colorless, it did darken the color of the rust a bit.

I did read -- I think somewhere in the steamfashion community at LJ, not sure -- that sealing rust may turn it black, since it's just the oxidizing process that gives the red hue, and that the real colour of rust is black. Can't really back this up with facts, since I'm no chemist, but it may provide an interesting effect either way...

Hmmm. I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on them and see what happens. I'd prefer they stay red, but black would work, too. Perhaps some research is in order . . .

Loving the key-as-a-closure thing.
If I may ask, what did you use for the covers?

Thanks! The covers are suede leather recycled from a skirt, backed with japanese kozuke paper. Then I added wood veneer to the front and back. I don't know what kind of wood it is, though, as it came from a mixed batch.
