Same goes for gender identity. Boys can be feminine, girls can be masculine. This goes out for trans and cis individuals! Trans people are told they "need to pass" or that they need to be masculine if they're a boy or feminine if they're a girl, but that's not the case. I have two friends who are FtM and masculine, three FtM friends who are feminine, three others who don't care or they switch, two MtF friends who are feminine, and one MtF friend who is lesbian and tomboy.Β Β

How dare you be open-minded and reasonable when there are sexually conservative fanatics in the world bent on forcing people to fit their stereotypes?!?!
Seriously though, this is awesome. Β Drawing style is awesome, message is awesome, topics of common stereotyping are awesome. Β I especially like that your message was polite, without getting all huffy and upset, the way a lot of people in the world tend to do with sensitive issues. Very nicely handled, great piece overall. Β 10/10 in my opinion

hairstyle shouldn't mean squat. Β I love wearing my hair short, and my husband likes his hair to be long. Β Too often people have called me 'butch', and told me I look like a 'dyke'. Β Wtf? Β Even if those slang terms applied to me, that's stupid of people to mention. -_-

Um. This is a comic, not a survey. Don't lecture w/o data. Just saying.
(If you do take a survey that includes bis, i'm a bi who likes themes and will wear what I feel that day, from punk to dresses.)

How does "no lesbian looks the same" as in, "no human looks the same" a lecture? It's simple fact and non-problematic. Perhaps you didn't bother to read the comic in its entirety? It makes quite a few points up there that would perhaps clear up your knee-jerk reaction. Your comment makes no cognitive sense. And we did survey. Quite a bit.
This has nothing to do with bisexuals since by nature it is titled "Lesbians 101." Don't comment without gathering your thoughts coherently, please.

My femme ex gf and I went to the movies several months back. It always cracks me up inside to see the confused looks people give when two femme girls hold hands.
Although I am Pansexual, not lez, the same rules still apply. I LOVE your comic!!!

Gosh, I wish I could just give this to my friends! Most of my friends think that I don't look "lesbian enough," that I look terrible in dresses (despite the fact that none of them have seen me in one), and I hate anything girly.

I should get everyone in my school read this. They all seem to believe that I'm not right for me being a Lesbian, and it really isn't fair. They all stereotype so quickly, it's hard to make a point.

The main reason for that question is that the feminine lesbians just pass right under their nose. When people see a cute, typical looking girl, they just assume she's straight, but all they notice in lesbians are the butch girls.

This is true to a point. Many people just assume that two girls having coffee are friends, not wives. However, many people wrongly assume that 'butch' women are lesbians, when some women are just more comfortable dressing or styling themselves a certain way. I've known both kinds of people, and it's interesting to see the reactions when they 'come out' as lesbian or straight.

My thoughts exactly. I've always been a tomboy, so when I came out no one was really surprised. Which is weird cause when I went through my denial stage, I talked about how gays are gross and sinful.
Guess you can't change stereotypes.

While I agree with the lesson to a point, I cannot deny that there are trending themes that have been noted in the lesbian community if we're going off appearances. I agree a blanket generalization of 'all lesbians look this way' is incorrect, but I think its safe to say the 'butch lesbian' isn't unusual or non existent.

Have you actually seen a "lesbian community"? First off, I want the address. Secondly, a majority of lesbians you see you won't ever know they're lesbians, because to you "they don't look like lesbians".
The butch was adopted as a lesbian label by heterosexuals more to secure their identity rather than it being common among gays. "OUR women look/act like this, THEIR women look/act like that." To say ANYTHING is non-existent in a community is denial. The butch women exists in the heterosexual community as much as it does the LGBT one. It exists, but it's rare. From my personal experience in the past 8 years with relationships, my sister who's married, and her close ring of friends who are also married, I've yet to meet a butch who was lesbian. To date they've all been heterosexual women (all with husbands or boyfriends) who grew up living off the land, and have strong Christian beliefs.
So butch isn't safe to say, in fact it's completely inaccurate. It's like saying metrosexuals make up the majority of heterosexual men. The only "safe" thing to say is short hair is more common among lesbians. However, if you ask most short haired females their sexual preference, it's usually strait.

Definitely not, I agree! The point wasn't to say that no lesbian looks like a stereotype, but that they can vary widely just as much as any other person of any orientation. Just like some gay men might fit into the 'neat, polished, posh' stereotype, but there are also those that like urban wear or have 6 foot long dreadlocks. Really, this was a product of how often upon discovering we're lesbians, people think nothing of remarking "But you don't LOOK like a lesbian," and the question popping up over and over of why all lesbians are 'butch'. So many people say they never see the 'femme' or 'other styled' lesbians, but really, it's their own stereotyping that gets in the way of them being blinded to the fact that the two long haired girls in pink dresses at the corner cafe aren't just good friends, or the mom with her kids at the playground isn't waiting for 'Daddy', but for 'Other Mommy'.

Short hair is awesome. I just cut mine pixie-style the other day. It's fun because I just put water in it and ruffle it... Tada! Spiky hair. Plus, I live in Florida. It's too hot to have long hair in my opinion. @-@

I don't necessarily support homosexuality, but I agree with this one hundred percent. To judge a person based on appearances is horribly superficial and foolish, regardless of the stereotype you're assuming they fall under.
