Description
First, a huge thanks to for letting me color her art! (You can see the original here [link] )Please rip the coloring apart on this deviation! This is my first attempt ever at coloring in Photoshop. I normally work in Illustrator (but that can be a bit slow...) I guesstimate that I've put about 20 hours in on it. Already I'm thinking about redoing the background, as the style seems to clash with the foreground.

That looks really great, although a little bit dark for my poor eyes. Illustrator? Wow, I never got the hang of that one...

I'm working on lighting it a bit. I only used Illustrator for the background, check out my gallery if you really want to see some Illustrator abuse.

This really came out solid. You should definately be happy with the result!
Though if you're looking for things to possibly be improved... I agree that Allen is slightly out of place with his environment. But that's a hard angle to be lit from, and we want to see the character. If it were me and I was looking for a quick fix, I might throw on a multiply layer, cover him in the appropriate dark shadow color, and then use a Mask or an eraser to lighten up on areas of that shadow - to create a secondary light (coming from somewhere off camera, most easily done from the lower center of the picture).
Honestly, I think you could let the picture stand as is. And that background is remarkable. I think I see how it could be done fast, but you're really gonna have to show me how you managed that in Illustrator.

one last thing, I think the grass on the cliff is blending with the green of the valley below. Perhaps adding a bit of yellowish/orange highlight where the sun is hitting the cliff edge would distinguish between fore and background a bit more?

oh! I'm so happy to see that you finished this. I think because his hair is hanging between his face and the setting there would be more shadow, but I can see that you didn't want to cover his face in shadows either. Not sure what to do about that. And I think Stacie's suggestion is a good one. It's a good picture and will make a nice print, dontcha think? (btw, thanks for making that rose look like a rose instead of the blob like thing I drew)

I tried having shadows on his face, but it looks goofy and out of place, but I'm going to refine the shading more. Good idea for the grass hilights, I'll do that and see what happens. I'm also going to try out adding some wispy fog in the bottom of the valley to make a better separation between foreground and background.
When I'm finished tweaking, it will be a print for sure.
Oh, and your rose was fine, just some shading helped define it more.

I'd be interested in seeing what you do with that fog. ^__^ Good luck with the tweaking, and keep us posted.

actually, all I think the background needs is a bit more depth of field, if the camera was focused on him the background may be a bit more out of focus... most importantly near the edge of his cliff and the bg.

I did the background in Adobe Illustrator, rather quickly too.
